HTPCNews.com In-Depth Guide: Building an HTPC for around $1000

Everyone knew that sooner or later HTPCNews would finally bring you a guide on building a HTPC. Well folks here it is! Our first in a three part series of building HTPC guides, each focusing on a different price bracket. Today's guide is Building a HTPC for around 1000 Dollars. All of the hardware you could need is covered in this guide, along with some looks at the pieces of software that we all love to use in our HTPC's. For those of you who are just now looking into HTPC's, this is for you. For those of you who have been around for a while, you might get some new ideas from it too.

If you wish to check it out, click here

All of these machines would be perfect for BTV btw..

Doh! I just posted a thread just like this.

Good article, but I think you were missing some costs in there (Hey, I understand, it is hard to come in under $1000). Like missing an OS in the cost (but you are obviously not talking about building a Linux box) and not any mention of the cost of some PVR software. And an 80GB hard drive is hardly reasonable in a HTPC.

Samsung SIR-TS160 DirecTV HDTV tuner outputing to SVideo on PVR-250 and all output from the computer going to RGB input on a Mitsubishi 55" HDTV in 856x480. Combination optical input into sound card and stereo left/right into PVR-250. Still working on how to lay down AC-3 tracks from the optical input during capture.

it's just an entry level machine A good starting point is what we were looking at..

As for costs of OS and such, different people will use different things, so we left that out on purpose.

We'll have a software guide series online in short order that will expand on the portion that was included in this guide.

Hey Brad, I am in like urgent need of a case, care to share which cases you plan on using for the mid and higher range recommendations. And if you are suggesting the atech have you physically played with it?

I tried to get the atech.. however he isn't sending out any review units. From what it sounds, it takes him so long to build each one that you'll be waiting for a while..

personally for the high end one, I'm thinking of using the Ahanix Dvine5. Only thing I don't like about it is the mATX PSU, however they now offer a 300w one that provides PLENTY of power for almost any HTPC type setup.
