OT: silencing an AMD XP2100

Ok, I need to ditch the ball bearing fan that I currently have on my AMD processor and look at the quieter running solutions. IDeally I'd like heatsink only but I think I might need a slow fan alongside .

Anyone got any tips for a good quiet solution for an AMD XP2100+ ?

ditto for quiet powersupplies. Antec true power overkill? or are there better options out there..

Here's a cpu cooler for you (the one I have):

It runs at only 2500rpm and is quiet.

Silenx

I have the SilenX MCX-462V cooling a AMD 2800+ at only 14dBA, I believe the quietest yet. Even under heavy encoding load, the temp never exceeds 36-37 degrees Celsius. I've had a couple of Zalman's latest, but the SilenX is much more quiet. Combined with my Antec Sonata case with acoustical padding, you don't hear a peep, other than the ejecting of a DVD!

SilenX

No Zalman

Don't get the Zalman model that has a huge copper heatsink with a 80mm fan that attaches off a bracket from your PCI cards. This setup is quiet but does not survive extended heavy loads. While encoding a Divx video using Dr. Divx, it fried my ol' reliable 2100 chip and the mobo.

If you have hardware encoding/decoding and don't plan on any transcoding (divx, wmv, etc..) then the Zalman might work. It worked wonderfully keeping the system cool and quiet under normal (surfing, e-mail, etc.) loads.

I am running the Speeze "FalconRock
25db is pretty good for the price. It is much quieter then the OEM AMD fan.

I have a really hard time believing that the fan was responsible for that. I have a Zalman cooler on my AMD 64 chip. It's quiet and keeps the CPU very cool.

I believe the one you are referring to is the Zalman CNPS6000-AlCu. I have the 7000 version.

Typically, when the CPU overheats enough, you are likely to get lock ups and random reboots first. My first guess would be that the thermal grease was improperly applied not allowing for proper heat transfer to the heat sink.

Frying the motherboard though? How could the cooler be responsible for that? It's job is to cool the CPU, not the motherboard.

(Caveat: I'm not very thrilled with the 6000 design, however. Just my personal opinion).

I just installed a spire whisper rock which was a huge improvement. I don't know if it is the quietest, but it's a definate improvement.

I also dropped my casefans to 7v. Right now the noisiest thing in my system is my HD. Truth be told, I'm okay with a little noise because whenever you are using the system, you're going to have music/TV sound drowning out the CPU noise.
