Thumbs down Record New Episodes

I am using the Canadian listings for Starchoice. I just realized that I missed the last two weeks of Smallville because I have BTV set to record only New Episodes. The Program Guide listed them as Repeat episodes... Makes me wonder how many other shows I've missed.

Record New Episodes: Is first-aired, same day new episodes.

Record All Episodes: Is all episodes not currently stored on the computer. IE: If you have Episode 3 of Simpsons already on the harddrive it will NOT record it again.

I have a problem like that with one show. I ended up setting it to record all and toss the ones that are reruns or cancel them beforehand. the program is only as good as the guide data.

sometimes guides may have a 'standard' listing then a day before suddenly list the correct episode, but sometimes btv has to be bounced in that case to pick up the change. supposedly that will be fixed in 3.5, whenever that is

I have noticed the same thing, and it is kind of annoying, the only reason I can think why it is happening is that the show was shown on a US network before it was shown on Canadian TV. I am pretty sure that is the case with one show that I watch, American Chopper, it always shows as a repeat, and it is on a couple nights earlier on US Discovery, so even though it is the first showing on Canadian Discovery, it shows up as a repeat.

I don't think the guide info is really something SS can fix. They get teh data put out by the networks and cable channels. It is very simple if the original air date is not the day you set it to record it will not record as a First Run. That is the entire algorithm. Most of cable network shows and news just have some generic date on them. SO first run recording is not a possibility.

timeshift channels were my problem

I had this issue with West Wing because I was recording on a timeshift channel from the west coast. It was being shown on the west coast channel 12:00 am Thursday mornings and was not automatically considered New because the actual original air date was Wednesday.

Of course, I don't expect BTV to work around that.

This might not be the problem in your case, though.

I'm pretty sure I slackened the "first-run" constraints to something within 7 days of the original air date in 3.5...I'm sure someone will correct me if that doesn't end up working. =)
