Recording from cable box?

Right now, I connect my cable hookup right to the WinTV PVR250 card and record from whatever channels I can get, so the first 170 or whatever. I see an option to run through my cable set top box. How does that work? Can I still tell my PVR machine, through BTV3, to record a show on such and such a channel at X p.m. and it will tune to that station through the box and record? There's several programs that run on the higher channels I'd like to record if it's possible.

Thanks for any help on this,
JG

Actually I did not know you could even do the setup your currently running with a satellite.

What I hear of most often is controlling the dish box externally. What it requires is either an IR blaster that will send the command similiar to a remote control and is sticked on the front on the box, or the much better method of using a serial connection between the computer and the receiver. If you have a serial port go with that method, if you don't you have no other option but the IR blaster. The kits both cost I think about $25 and are sold here at Snapstream.

Basically you would use BTV and when you say change to channel 15 it sends the command to the receiver and changes it to channel 15.

Clarification

I'm running BTV on my CABLE feed, no satellite, to clarify. What I'm wondering is if I route it so that my BTV machine is after the cable box on the coax cable, can the program still record shows. Let's say WINTV is on channel 3, can BTV then change stations on the cable box to record different shows on different stations?

Yes, BTV can control your cable box it does this as I mentioned through an IR blaster or Serial connection, however would your cable box not hookup through the Svideo, it really does not matter though you can make it so the WinTV card is fixed to channel 3 and it changes channels on the cable box.
