the pvr-250 registry hack , questions..

I read the thread about this hack:

HKLM \ Software \ IviSDK4Hauppauge \ Common \ VideoDec \ Dxva

HKLM \ Software \ IviSDK4Hauppauge \ Common \ VideoDec \ Hwmc

I changed the values to 1 and restarted beyond tv , perhaps I need a reboot etc.. anyway , I'm curious , , I'm using the driver that came with the card and the software etc.. Should I uninstall all of the software and install the latest web driver for the best performance? or should the driver that came with the card on cd have the same effect , I phoned into my house just now <--as you can tell I barely use my htpc , and asked my fiance , if she thought she saw a difference , she said she thinks it looks worse , as she's watching shrek and said it just doesn't look as good as it "should" now I can't see this with my own eyes , so I'm not sure if it's worse , better , etc.. and I can't get cpu stats from here , but , I need to know which is the best driver version.. --Josh

the newer ones are always a better bet, the cd version of the drivers will not work with beyondtv, if you updated the drivers without updating the intervideo decoder then that may be causing some of the problems.

The decoder also might not fully work with some video cards. If you cant get good performance out of it I would suggest looking at NvDVD since you have an nvidia card, I use it on both of my systems and it is much better than the intervideo one.

My biggest hurdle is my monitor , it's a 36" vga monitor that can only do 640x480 res , but the problem is , when in that res, the picture is too big for the screen , I have to use Nvidia's keystone to fit everything onto the screen , keystone is a system hog and since it's an overlay , that hinders performance as well ,

I am pretty sure I am using the drivers from the cd , and yet beyond tv works , so I dunno what you mean by "won't work with beyond tv" The nvidia card I have is an 8x gf4 ti 64 megs.

if anyone knows of a better way to scale down the screen to fit the monitor let me know!! hehe

I would suggest trying powerstrip, it can fudge around with video cards to do stuff like that.

the pvr250's retail cd drivers (dont know if this is the case with the new red boxed versions, but the older ones wont work period) shouldnt work with btv.

as for the nvidia you should be running the latest ones for them.

I have the latest nvidia driver , and i'll give a look at powerstrip , hopefully it's not as much of a video killer as keystone is..

If you download the current drivers from the nVidia site and look through the config app you can adjust your under/overscan there without the need for additional software like PowerStrip.

There is no need for PowerStrip with an nVidia board.

Yep, correct, I missed that. I forgot about this as I'm an S-Video user even though my card has DVI out. TV is an older Sony SDTV and doesn't support anything above S-Video.

Powerstrip seems like a very powerful program , however anything I touch in there makes my monitor go nuts , I seem to start getting close to correct and then if I take the values any further my screen either goes haywire and can't read anything or the picture starts rolling off the screen and back on constantly.. Am I supposed to be playing with advanced timings or something else in there?

Yes advanced timing. It sounds like you are setting the vertical refresh rate too high.

I use powerstrip to run my dual 19" monitors at 1472x1104 because 1600x1200 is too small.

I also use it to drop down to 640x480 for BeyondTV since XP doesn't support that resolution natively. It sure does make everything huge on a 19". I have the refresh rate set to 84.988Hz which is just fine on my monitor and has no flicker (120Hz at 640x480)

unfortunatly , i have to run 640x480 constantly on this monitor , and at 60hz it's pretty old but looks really nice in my bedroom haha , it being vga made it easier as I didn't have to worry about poor picture over svideo etc.. I'll play around with some different options and see what can be done , I wish I could figure out whicih file on the compaq did the resize and port it to xp haha , any clue which of those settings need to be tweaked for vert size and horiz size
