WMV Timings
I did some timings of conversions from MPEG format of a 5 minute file to windows media format. The formats I used were all identical except for the Windows Media Version (I used 7 and 9) and number of passes, results are listed below:
WMV7 1 Pass - 6 minutes (1.2x) WMV7 2 Pass - 11 minutes (2.2x) WMV9 1 Pass - 22 minutes (4.4x) WMV9 2 Pass - 32 minutes (6.4x) All were done on the same machine with nearly identical conditions.

This is a common find, and for that reason most people use WMV7.
I have been wondering though if hyperthreading would help with these times at all? -Brett

How do I know what WMV version I am using and how do I change it?
Probably a stupid question, thus making me fully qualified to ask it!

by default Good, Better, and Best are 9, Near DVD and the others are 7.
You can go through Configuer->Recording Prefrences->List All Qualities and edit them to see which one you are using. -Brett
