Editing AVI files generated with BTV

In an attempt to remove commercials before archiving to DVD I have experimented with Virtual Dub. I started out being able to do this, but a few tweaks later, I've forgotten what settings I used.

Now, whenever I bring up an AVI file recorded with BTV, Virtual Dub can't decode the audio in the file. The error message says that Virtual Dub cannot locate an audio decompressor.

I have used Windows Movie Maker to perform this task, and it works pretty well, but it seems to take longer, and I can't actually edit the original file by deleting selected parts. I have to create a new project and insert parts of the original file.

Is there a setting somewhere that allows me to specify the audio compression that Virtual Dub recognizes?

Try VirtualDubMOD, it should be able to decode the audio. Works for me. Great program to edit out the commercials from your DivX files.

Now if someone could make a plug-in for VirtualDubMOD using the SmartChapter file so I didn't have to find to commercials myself!

Thanks for the info.

I did a search for VirtualDubMOD and can't find it. Do you have a link?

Would I get better results from using VdubMod on the MPEG-2 files and editing, then saving as DivX, or converting the whole file to DivX and then editing (with VdubMod)?

I cannot get audio in sync if I edit the MPEG-2 file and then save as DivX in VdubMod, and am looking for a better solution.

I also tried using Virtualdubmod to edit out commercials for content created with Snaptream, and then frameserving back to Tmpgenc for output to dvd. This process gave me a lot of headaches, and even when it did work, the audio got out of sync.. In search of a better solution, I read posts about Tmpgenc dvd author, so I plunked down the money.. And now I'm much happier.

The key is to edit only on the I frames (which dvd author does).

Can't help you with previously record files but if you want to be able to edit your mpeg files without sync issues go into your settings and change the program type from "DVD Stream" to "Program Stream".

This solved my editing issues.

Re: Editing AVI files generated with BTV

After solving this problem with Virtualdub MPEG2 for quite some time, I broke down and upgraded to Vista. When I did that, I found out that Virtualdub MPEG2 sapped ALL of my resources, and took hours to even load an MPG file created by BTV. I visited the VirtualDub MPEG2 forum only to find out that this program isn't Vista compatible...and likely never will be.

I tried to going back to showsqueeze and create an AVI file I could edit, but the same old error with the audio decompressor came back. And I goofed and had Showsqueeze delete the original MPG file.

What sorts of configurations are being used for editing these files now that Vista has come out? Any ideas of new programs to use?

I will try to change the streaming setting for the new files I record to Program Stream, but I have a couple of Disney Channel movies I recorded for my daughter that I would still like to edit for her. Unfortuneately, they are in the Showsqueezed AVI format that VirtualDub doesn't like.
