playback mpg2 file in SS library

I wanted to add some movie files (from DVD) that I copied into mpg2 onto my hard drive. They're quite large ~ about 6 GB.

They play back fine in Windvd and Windows media player, but If I copy to the video library in SS and then try to play, I get a corrupt or missing file error in SS.

What gives? Thought SS would play any mpeg 2 file.

Using version 3.3

did you just rename the VOB files or did you actually convert the video?

just renaming wont work VOB is NOT MPEG2, it is an MPEG2 Container that holds mpeg2 video and multiple audio/program streams. If you want dvd's to playback with snapstream you are going to have to convert them using something like dr divx or have something extract the video stream and convert the audio stream from ac3/dolby into mpeg2 audio then re-combine (mux) it with the video file. your best bet is dr divx.

Using DVDDecrypter in IFO mode I saved the film as one continuous vob. Then renamed it. Programs see it (at least WinDVD and MS Media Player) and play it as an mpg file.

I have no interest in converting to divx or another format - can't stand the loss in quality - especially on my big HDTV.

I assume the soundtrack is still in AC3 and embedded in the vob/mpg file.

I was hoping I could play my movies inside Snapstream and keep one interface instead of having to run another program (xlobby) to manage my movies.

Both of those programs play VOB files. SnapStream does not. Just because you rename the extension does not make it an Mpeg file. It's still a VOB file just with an Mpeg extension. Extensions merely let programs know what kind of files they are. So if you give it an Mpeg extension, it will show up as a playable file for any program that plays Mpegs. But that doesn't mean it will actually play. If/when SnapStream decides to add VOB support, then they would play just like they do for WinDVD and MS MP.
