Win TV 250

So, my Win TV and Snapstream just arrived, and I need a link to an easy guide on how to receive channels (i.e. hook up to my cable). Anyone have a link - then I'll start asking questions.

basically get windows and your video/sound drivers up to date first, get them from their manufacturers; download all windows updates for data services, msdac, jet, directx, servicepack, and mediaplayer9. Also before you procede do some reboots, clean up the harddrive with chkdsk/scandisk and defragment it. You should also disable the tv out/multi-monitor function on your video card during the setup as it can sometimes piss off the wizard or the hauppauge programs.

then goto this page:
http://www.hauppauge.com/html/sw_pvr_250.htm
and follow their installation instructions to the T

reboot and make sure the wintv app works (if it dont snapstream isnt likely to either)

If you are hooking up a satalite/cable box then read up on this article:
http://www.snapstream.com/Community/...externaltuners

then install snapstream and walk thru the setup program and the wizard. Once that is done read up on this article:
http://www.snapstream.com/Community/Articles/decoders

And you should be able to get it all up and running from there on, now flood with the ????'s

it probably doesnt most of the articles are going to assume that you are going:

Cable box -> Snapstream Box -> TV

not splitting the signal, since if you are using the cable box for snapstream to record and it is currently displaying the box on the tv not SS and someone decides to change the channel you get a ruined recording. if ss was on the tv they would get a warning that it is recording (completely assuming that you are using the computer's remote not the cable box as that would still cause the afore mentioned problem)

also they are all going to assume that you can hookup cables to a vcr/tv

What's I'd like to do is enable my pc to get the cable stations as well and not mess with the TV (I've heard also that if you don't have a plasma TV or the like it's not gonna look too good). I want to use the PC as a vcr - then burn shows to DVD and watch'm on my TV. I realize you can't mess with the stations on the TV if the PC is recording, but that's ok.

Wouldn't I use a splitter for this?

in that case you would, and it actually depends on how the tv is hooked up, if you are using cablebox -> svideo -> tv then just hook the cable connection directly to the computer, if you are using cable you can just hook the svideo from the box to the tuner card but then you need audio cables as well, or just get a splitter and split the cable coming from the box to the tv and run the new split off to the tuner card

And then I can use it like a VCR?

Yep, my 1.8 is basically a vcr, the 800mhz is connected to the tv and acts as a tivo. You will need some program to author the mpeg files into dvd-video format, there is a thread at the top of the general forum that has several methods/programs to do dvd authoring you should have a looksee.

No I have a generic Panasonic 32" tv set and the quality coming out of the gf2mx and the pvr looks better than the picture the tv gets by itself and it is all connected with a 12' svideo cable (of not that great quality)

Hmm. Maybe I should do it that way.

Is there a down side? Do you not get all the channels?

well i dont have digital cable or satalite, the computer gets all the standard channels i get, could care less about the movie channels i dont like seeing movies more than once.

I havent seen any down side other than when im using the 800 to burn dvd's and im forced to use the actual tv set's tuner to watch tv (timeshifting / guide withdrawal comes up real quickly)

Basically i just have both hooked directly to the cable, and use the 800 as a tivo, the 1.8 is my main gaming/development rig and i have its video folder shared over to the 800 so i can playback on either computer the videos from the other. since the computers are both across the room from the tv i have a 15' cable from the 1.8 to the tv that i made from scratch (ethernet cable and some svideo cable ends from radioshack) and a 12" cable from bestbuy (cheapy one that was like 15$) for the 800. The tv quality from the 800 is better than that wich I see from the tv itself (the pvr's tuner clears up a lot of the cable interfearance)

you would only get the basic cable thru the pvr if you dont have snapstream hooked up to control the cable box. if you hooked up the cable box, used an ir blaster, and configured snapstream to control the box then you would be able to get whatever channels you get via the box

And the ir blaster isn't supported, and I won't know if it works with my cable box until I try?
