Decoder reccommendations

Can anyone recommend a good low cost decoder for my Adaptec VideoOh+SS 3.3 solution. I guess I was under the mistaken impression that all I had to do to reduce the CPU load was to have a hardware encoder. Since then I have learned that I also need a good decoder to lighten the CPU load (did I really need the hardware encoder...could I have just gone with a cheaper tuner card (software), spent less money and been able to stream TV, and purchased a good 3rd party decoder???)

I have spent my wad on SS PVS 3.3, Adaptec VideOh Media Station and a USB 2 port. Now I need a low cost (read: free) decoder that will keep my CPU from pegging at 100%.

My current system includes the VideoOh, a 1.2 MHz PIII, 16 MB Video RAM ATI Mobility, 512 RAM.

By the way, another thread spoke of a decoder for the Hauppaugge card that was free. I tried to install this on my system and it would not install. I was wishful thinking that is would install on a system without Hauppauge.

Thanks for your recommendations.

Jeff

Not sure how far it will bring down your CPU since it does not support hardware acceleration (since the SS one is so bad it should do something), but the Elecard decoder is used by AV enthusiasts for picture quality. Plus it is only $20 (has a free trial too). Keep in mind that any of the benefits of a decoder will come from your video card and video drivers.

You should look at ati and see if you can get a copy of their MMC software, even though you dont have an aiw card the mmc will provide you with a software decoder, another one you can try is nvdvd it is 29$ i think (dont remember), there is a listing of them on the 3rd party decoder article page:

only the top 3 are hardware accelerated (elcard is not one of them)

Yeah in that system (specially since its a laptop) you dont have much choice other than going for a hardware encoder, most of the other usb devices only record at low resolutions and are software encoders
