Unhappy MPEG4 Simple Profile video codec Support

Sold the pocket PC and just got a Sony Clie UX50 (much better than iPaq)
http://sonyelectronics.sonystyle.com/micros/clie/

The new PDA is amazing But I dont have windows media player! I miss my snap stream in my pocket. can Snapstream record in a format that will play on the Clie? MPEG4 Simple Profile video codec

i have the built in player, Kinoma player, and I can download MMplayer

1. Is this possible?
2. Has anyone figured this out or have some ideas?
3. Or should I sell my "Micro snap stream server"

and get one of these?

has anyone out there heard of a device called the Palm Pilot?
it looks like one of these...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=3056818186

it is rumored that these devices have a memory card and fast enough processor to play video.

Do you think that it could play snap stream re-compressed videos? any idea what format would it need to be encoded in? and what program to use on the palm?

you are probably going to have to look into a divx player for the palm os and then use the divx transcode in snapstream, other than that you would have to find some other program that can convert video into the format the clie supports

No snapstream can only record directly into mpeg2 and wmv format it can transcode from any format it recognises into wmv or divx5

well I think the palms will play mpeg2 if you use a free program called MMplayer. but what about the format. Not sure what to set the recompression to. I was hoping that I wasn't the only one out there who is tinkering with Palm and snapstream.

=====
Snapstream support for Palm would be very welcome

goto the palm site or who ever developed the mmplayer program and see what the palm should be able to playback, one thing you can easily find out is the resolution, the palm isnt going to be able to playback somehting larger than the display's resolution, so if the palm has a 320x240 display that is the max you are going to be able to record at and get it to playback on the palm, since you probably arent going to want to record directly at the palms resoltuion for pc playback reasons and snapstream cant re-encode to mpeg2 (only works live) you are going to probably want another program like tmpgenc to recompress the video down to the palms specs when you find out what they are.

is it possible to set up a custom re-encode for snapstream in mpeg 2 with low resolution and frame rate? if so maybe tempenc wouldnt be necessary.

I am confused, why not record in low quality? if U were only to watch shows on your PDA and you could encode directly to something palm OS 5 could handle, what's the issue? i realize u cant re encode it to a better quality.

you can set a direct recording to the proper bitrates but snapstream can only recompress into divx and windows media format, it can only record live to mpeg2

was just thinking that most would be using the recordings for other things but if you are only going to use them for the palm then recording directly shouldnt be a problem

ok I think I get it. so then recompression to mpeg 2 is not possible but I can record in low grade mpeg2 direct.

I am trying to save $300 and not buy the sony memory schtick I mean stick video recorder not to mention $600 for a 512MB memory stick

might be able to do the same thing with snapstream and it is a whole lot cheaper

thank U for reply

I have the SJ22. I love it. UX50 is WAY too expensive for a PDA. Back in the day, I thought Compaq was awful proud of their equipment based on price (I paid $699 for my 3635 a couple years ago, I must have been stupid).

The Palms are getting close to the multimedia capability of the WINCE world, but still far from it in terms of brute power. As an exaple - my Sega Dreamcast is a Windows CE machine. Don't know of any consoles that chose PalmOS for the core.

All kidding aside - Kinoma is junk - the files are huge, and low quaity. If you but the producer software, you get a batch processor, which would be convenient.

I love my Sony Clie for work, but for play, hand over my Dell Axim!

Time to eat my words...

Okay, eating my words here.

Just picked up a tungsten E, and added MMplayer. Awesome results with my DIVx flic I encoded. 1 hour = 58meg. Nice compression.

Unfortunately, I can't get the SS produced video to work in MMplayer. I assume it isn't MP3 audio encoded. Any possibility of adding that feature to the recompress options?
