Subtitled movie playback ;)

Ok, I finally got around to ripping subtitles for a dvd and trying out the directvobsub stuff with a divx compression of the movie.

And.. well it worked perfectly; perfect sync.. AND

I can watch the subtitles in snapstream

Steps I took

1/ ripped dvd to harddrive using dvdshrink; in this case I just extracted the main title + audio + captions

2/ Used drDivx to compress to divx format. Reduced 4GB down to 898MB and still looks sharp and clear on a 1280x1024 desktop

3/ Ran SubRip 1.17.1 on the ifo of the dvd rip (from dvdshrink)

Couple of minutes and a few keypresses to learn the character matrix and I had a subtitle .srt file.

4/ Named the srt file the same as the .avi (divx) file; and opened in WMP 9.

If you turn on the 'captions and subtitles' if available it indeed shows text in a rather plain format below the video.

I found however, that I preferred to install directvobsub from the vobsub release. You turn off the WMP subtitles and let directvobsub control it - this way it overlays using a far nicer font imho and looks like the original dvd captions.

directvobsub pops up an icon in the systray that you can use to toggle captions etc.. and it also shows you the graph as well...

And for the final test; I moved the .avi/.srt file into a folder that snapstream was looking at. Launched the video library clicked on play file and bingo.

Divx playback through snapstream's interface with the captions.

And just to prove it (and that I am indeed a crazy b*tard.) here's a screen shot. I deliberately paused so you could see the overlay from SS ontop of the subtitled picture (or you'd not believe it

I'm not sure this will work for the other formats; but I'll be trying mpg and avi formats as well. In theory directvobsub should work but I think getting time synchronised captions might be more of a pain in the arse for the other formats as I'll need to build the file by hand or find a copy on the web...

Wow! Good work! Isn't that amazing that Directvobsub works in BTV without any update or support from BTV!

I'll have to try that with AutoGK once I find a movie that needs subtitles that I'd actually want to watch!

Definitely deserves a sticky!

Merrypig/Ian/Crazy Bastard

Wooohooo!
Thanks a lot. I have tons of subtitled movies, and hold evenings at home to watch them with friends. Until now I have had to use BS Player...

Thanks
Eric
