I can't use dual Hauppauge HVR-2250 cards. Can you?

Do you use two Hauppauge 2250 cards in one PC? If you do, do you have any tips on how to make it work reliably where one card is used with an antenna and the second card is used for clear QAM over cable?

For me, Win7 sees both cards just fine, but the Hauppauge drivers seem to get confused when enumerating the device list. I don't think this is a hardware issue, but an oversight in the design of the drivers for the cards. They assume (incorrectly) that all signal sources are identical and any of my four tuners (two on each card) can be selected for any recording. Sometimes it works okay, and other times it can't find a correct tuner. I'm hoping the cure is as simple as a registry tweak or an XML file tweak. I contacted Hauppauge and they say dual cards with different signal sources are not supported. That's sad since 99% of the code seems to be good already. It's just missing some "traffic cop" tweaks to route requests to the correct tuner based on the signal type.

More background info: I have a Win7 64-bit system that includes two identical Hauppauge HVR-2250 cards. My intention is to use both tuners on the first card for receiving OTA 8VSB signals from an antenna. I want both tuners on the second card for clear 256QAM over cable. For the last year, this setup has worked, but it has been erratic. Sometimes BTV fails to record the clear QAM because it's trying to use the wrong card. (As far as that goes, Hauppauge's own WinTV application does not do this correctly, either. Setup goes fine, but at run time it gets confused)

Also, with the most recent Hauppauge drivers (7.9.1.28162) BTV 4.9 will sometimes record a clear QAM program, but it fails to do a streamsnip, which results in huge .TP files (17GB/hour). These are on QAM channels that share a common carrier frequency with other QAM channels. Perhaps it's not a streamsnip problem, but confusion about the resolution where it thinks it's using 1080i or 720p for a video stream that's actually SD.

So, for me, this setup works sometimes, but not all the time. I can't seem to predict when it will work. I have received no indication from Hauppauge this is a problem they plan to fix.

Re: I can't use dual Hauppauge HVR-2250 cards. Can you?

Thanks Bill, but the older 7.6.27.27323 drivers also have problems with the dual-card setup I have.

I can often get what I need after fiddling around. For example, I can't always change the QAM channel using BTV. I think BTV is attempting to do the right thing, but the Hauppauge driver directs the channel change command to the wrong card. So, I get out of BTV, then launch Hauppauge's WinTV and change the channel and exit. Then I go back into BTV and it's now on the correct channel. But once back in BTV, I can't change the channel again. Even this annoying method does not always work since WinTV also gets confused about which card is used for QAM cable and which is on an antenna. Sometimes nothing works. That's particularly annoying if a scheduled recording fails because it can't tune to the correct channel on the correct card.

To be fair, Hauppauge told me today they do not support this two-card two-source configuration. However, there is no mention on their web site that dual cards are only supported if they both use the same signal source (cable+cable or OTA+OTA, but not cable+OTA)

It's all very frustrating. I own three HVR-2250's and I have had various driver problems for most of the 2+ years I have attempted to use them.

Re: I can't use dual Hauppauge HVR-2250 cards. Can you?

Did you try installing 1 card.. Set it up. Then add the 2nd card..??
My 2 cards are setup for Cable SD & Cable QAM. So I have 4 cable inputs..
The 27323 drivers are the only ones that worked..
When I installed the new drivers, it when nutz...
I emailed Hauppauge, and they said they will work on it..

Re: I can't use dual Hauppauge HVR-2250 cards. Can you?

Yes, I tried using just using one card for the initial install, then adding the second one later. That did not help.

Also, I have an older HVR-2250 that uses an 88041 tuner. That card has a PCI ID of VEN_1131&DEV_7164&SUBSYS_88800070&REV_81. My newer 2250 cards have 88061 tuners and a PCI ID of VEN_1131&DEV_7164&SUBSYS_88910070&REV_81. I was hoping that using one old and one new card would cause it to see two different cards and be able to distinguish which was which. But that did not help. Both cards use the same driver.

Re: I can't use dual Hauppauge HVR-2250 cards. Can you?

I am posting a reply to my own thread in case somebody is researching the same problem...

It's true that Hauppauage's own WinTV software seems to be confused by having two identical HVR-2250 tuner cards in the same system. At this point I don't care since I prefer BeyondTV and it's now working.

My problem was related to a bad channel lineup for my QAM tuner card. Using Web Admin Settings, in the Video Inputs section I could see that it had assigned a channel lineup name that did not actually exist in the Channels section. How it got out of sync that way, I don't know.

The lineup name I saw in my snaptream.net account did not exist on the PC, but the PC had a similar one that did not show in .net. The only difference was the text "(QAM)" at the beginning of the lineup name. One had that text prefix; the other did not. Did I do that? Maybe, but I don't remember it. When BTV started up, it could not find the name it was looking for, and defaulted to a different lineup which only partially worked. There was no indication to me what was happening, but I did eventually find a warning message in the BTV startup log file about it. I deleted the bad lineup and reassigned tuner to a valid one.

Also disable the "Lineup Change Detection"..

I have no issues with the 2250. I've tried many drivers too. I'm using XP. Windows 7 gave me some issues however.
