Can't play recorded shows .mpg files remotely

I am using the latest version of BTV to record SDTV shows. The shows record fine and playback fine within BTV but if I try to play the .mpg file remotely from a different computer all I get is a blue screen with no sound. I've tried several different software players and all produce the same result. Yet everything works fine if played back within BTV. Any ideas why this is occurring?

Sounds like a codec issue. Which software players? Try VLC freeware - plays everything.

Re: Can't play recorded shows .mpg files remotely

I tried VLC as well and same thing. Using g-spot confirms it is a mpeg-2 file, which is what I have it set to record as in BTV. I have several different mpeg-2 codecs installed but for some reason the tv recordings from btv will only playback within btv. What is also weird is that all the mpeg-2 codec I have installed will play back the files fine within BTV. I can choose each one separately within the btv playback settings and each works. But the same codecs will not playback in any other player.

I couldn't tell from your posts if you had tried this, but can you play the files locally with any other player besides BTV? If you can, but the same files don't play remotely, then it must be a codec issue on the remote system, or a network issue. Can you play non-BTV mpeg-2 (e.g. DVD) files on the remote system OK? Have you tried copying the BTV files on to the remote system and playing them (rather than over a network share, or however you are accessing them remotely)?

Re: Can't play recorded shows .mpg files remotely

I cannot play the files locally on the BTV server or any of the 4 other computers on my network. Only via BTV either on the server or with BTV Link. On all 4 computers I can play MPEG-2 files except the BTV recorded shows. Another strange thing is that g-spot determines the codec to be mpeg-2, says it is installed but cannot render the video within g-spot itself. It shows the same blue screen.

For some reason I cannot choose WMV as the default recording type, otherwise I would see if that would allow me to play them outside of BTV.

Re: Can't play recorded shows .mpg files remotely

run graphedit on the server and then drop that mpg file into it and take a screenshot of the graph

post it up and let's see what codecs are being used to playback the file.
