HDHomeRun and PBS

I am using QAM to tune in the unencrypted HD channels provided by Charter in our area. THis is restricted to a couple of PBS stations, ABC and CBS.

The picture quality on CBS and ABC is superb but on PBS the video and audio is often garbled. I though the signal strengths were good when I originally configured the HDHomeRun and I have paid special attention to minimizing the numbe of splits on the cable coming into the house.

I have a 5 way split right as the cable comes into the house, one leg goes to the cable mode, 2 legs go to the HDHomeRun and the 4th go on to the regular cable service throughout the house.

I don't have an amplifier.

Is this a signal strength isssue and if so wiould it be resolved using a 2 way amplifier?
