channel changing too slow

I cant stand it when i change the channel and it takes a few seconds for BTV to buffer that channel so it can be paused and rewound. i know that this is the point but i want to be able to change a channel and have it respond instantly even if im not able to pause or rewind for a few seconds while it buffers. is there any way to do this? btw, this happens even if i change the timing of the channel selection (from 0.5 to await confirmation settings). its just too slow. i have a 3.1 ghz celeron with 1 GB DDR Ram and ATI 9550 for my video card.
