My Experiences with 4.6

Since I started 4.6, I decided to record my problems, just as a record of all the issues I experienced. I noticed in another thread ~2/3rds of 4.6 users have had no problems.... they are just plain damn lucky, I dunno how they do it...

here's my log so far:

fri feb 16 - upgraded from 4.5 with no issues

mon feb 19 - noticed that my monday night shows weren't recording. Tried to open live tv but it said there were no sources, to run setup wizard. Didn't do that. Ran Web admin and saw that my inputs and lineups were correct. Shutdown BTV and restarted it (no reboot) and it started recording.

wed feb 21 - noticed no shows have showsqueezed since saturday. tried to delete current showsqueeze job in web admin, no response at all after pressing delete. It just said there forever with "opening page..." in the status bar. Eventually (10+ mins later) shut down web browser, ran btv, went to recorded shows, picked a show, and BTV froze. After a couple mins ctrl-alt-del and killed btvtask.exe, btv returned to normal.

sat feb 24 - in the middle of watching a recorded show, screen suddenly became windowed all by itself... alt-enter twice fixed it back fullscreen

sat feb 24 - accidentally selected showsqueeze (instead of delete) from a recorded show properties, pressed yes, and viewscape quit responding. ctrl-alt-del, kill btvtask.exe, viewscame resumed responding

mon feb 25 - noticed a warning message in taskbar, something about a failed recording from last night at 10pm. Said no sources were available and to rerun setup wizard or something. However it's already recorded shows since then so I just cleared the error.

fri mar 03 - ran webadmin and noticed almost everything (8/10 shows failed, one is waiting, one is running) failed under 'showsqueeze'. They are failing "Error: AnalyzeVideo failed" without even getting to showsqueeze, they arent even getting smartchapters...

Re: My Experiences with 4.6

I was having issues as well. For no apparent reason recordings would fail to start... I don't exactly remember the error message anymore, but the gist of it was that I should run the Setup Wizard, which I have since done, many times. I also noticed that my Showsqueeze jobs (DivX) were failing... I believe the error message was "failed to attach graph."

I have since reverted to 4.5, which required a complete reinstall of Windows. Everything's working fine now.

Yup, I made the mistake of upgrading to 4.6, and now get the Failed to attach to graph crap, I get audio but no video, and also the log error that the "Selected save Drive cant be found" or some crappy error, despite it being listed in the settings. And then it tells me to run the setup again. which i run and run and run and run and run.

I have also Reinstalled 4.6 over and over and over and over again.

I thought Microsoft had the honor of being the only company to fix ONE bug, but introduce 10 more, seems i am wrong. I am Re-downloading 4.5 and going to uninstall 4.6, and reinstall 4.5.

[2007/3/4 07:40:36] COHauppaugePVR250CardBuilder:Build - Failed to build graph. err = 0x80004005

[2007/3/4 07:40:36] BTV Live TV failed to attach to graph.

Nope, 4.5 is arsed now. Nice going snapstream... 4.5 worked a treat, now i have touched the virus 4.6, I cant use 4.5 now.
And please explain to me what half arsed program makes you have to reinstall the WHOLE Operating system to ge tit working again.

Damned right I have, but I dont expect a response too soon.

[edit] alright, just a simple reboot fixed the graph problem.

Uninstall
Reboot (power off, not restart)
Install
reboot (Power off, not restart)

But now all I get is Audio only, No video.

[edit #2] Hahahahaha I should work for Snapstream.

The blank video but having sound was fixed, with BeyondTV defaulted to OVERLAY, I got Black Screen. I set the Playback to 3D Accelerated (What video card isnt these days), and got my picture back. So its all go at the Snapstream beyondTV. I'll probably get a response from Snapstream in about a week or so.

I KNOW you're frustrated - believe me. BUT everyone here knows that you have an image (Ghost or my personal favorite Acronis TrueImage) of a/the working system before messing around.

Do youself a favor and spend 39 bucks and get TrueImage - www.acronis.com.

Re: My Experiences with 4.6

I have had a few missed recordings as well after upgrading to 4.6. My ShowSqueeze with 2 pass Divx still doesn't work. Now I am not looking forward to try to roll back to 4.5 given what was said above.

Re: My Experiences with 4.6

I had the same problem with 4.6 and the "failed to attach to graph" error message. Here is what I did and I think I fixed it.

1. Uninstalled 4.6
2. Installed new drivers for pvr150 v2.7
3. Installed WMP 11 (i know not everyone likes it)
4. Installed BTV 4.6

Everything is working normally now (knock on wood).

Re: My Experiences with 4.6

FYI-

When I upgraded to 4.5 (from 4.4) I had the same problem with failed recordings.

The error message was something like stated above "no sources, run setup".

After several days of trouble shooting (and missing my wife's shows) I gave up and went back to 4.4.

Yes I submitted a ticket, but no I did not image my drive first. I thought what could go wrong and I hadn't seen any issues pop up on the forums.

I was considering 4.6, but think I will wait now as the same bug appears to be prevalent. Odd thing is that it doesn't seem to strike all systems. 4.5 didn't and doesn't look like 4.6 does either. Leads one to believe it is a specific hardware item. Maybe the capture card ("no source").

I have a Hauppauge PVR-500...

Cheers,
JHawker

Re: My Experiences with 4.6

If your system is working well without problems, it is the perfect time to make a ghost image backup or acronis backup of your system. This is insurance against any future problems that may arise. You can then upgrade to the newest version of BTV without worrying about it, if anything bad happens you can revert to your previous state without having to reinstall windows, drivers, BTV, etc.
If anything this should be a wake up call to everyone who isn't making a backup. Your windows system should be on a relatively small partition (10 gigs in my case) and your data (videos) would be on a large partition or seperate drive with 64k cluster size. This large partition or drive could also be where you put your backup image file and you could burn this image file to dvd in case your hardrive ever fails completely.
I know this requires a bit of planning but it's worth it if you have a BTV system that's golden.
