BTV-Externinator Channel Mapping

I am setting up my new hd-homerun and I'm at the part where I do the channel mapping with BTV-Externinator. I have done a relatively exaustive search of the forums to find a difinitive answer to this question, but I'm not having much luck as the BTV-Externinator thread is very very long.

When you go to map the channels, is it just a trial and error process where you tune the channels with VLC, figure out what you are watching, then map that frequency to the guide channel from BTV?

Seems like there may be a repository for this mapping information somewhere or a more efficient way to do this.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Re: BTV-Externinator Channel Mapping

Would have been better to ask in the BTV-Externinator thread, but... If you do a channel scan with the HDHomeRun_config, you can load up that file on the Table of channels sub-tab, which will populate a drop down list to ease up the process. If you are lucky, your cable company labels all the programs (sub-channels), so creating the table is trivial. If not, then you should probably use the HDHomeRun GUI + VLC to find which channel is which...

Re: BTV-Externinator Channel Mapping

Excuse my ignorance here, but could you please paste in a snippet of what the labelling you mention would look like? Here is a portion of my channelscan.txt

Inside of Externinator, it's not obvious to me what the channels are from the data in the dropdown.

I guess I'm just not sure what the different portions are telling me.

SCANNING: 55750000 (us-hrc:2)
LOCK: none (ss=92 snq=0 seq=0)
SCANNING: 57000000 (us-bcast:2, us-cable:2, us-irc:2)
LOCK: (ntsc) (ss=99 snq=0 seq=0)
SCANNING: 61750000 (us-hrc:3)
LOCK: none (ss=98 snq=0 seq=0)
SCANNING: 63000000 (us-bcast:3, us-cable:3, us-irc:3)
LOCK: (ntsc) (ss=100 snq=0 seq=0)
SCANNING: 67750000 (us-hrc:4)
LOCK: none (ss=99 snq=0 seq=0)
SCANNING: 69000000 (us-bcast:4, us-cable:4, us-irc:4)

Then you might be out of luck for the easy way... Something like:

SCANNING: 555000000 (us-cable:79, us-irc:79)
LOCK: qam256 (ss=97 snq=90 seq=100)
PROGRAM: 1: 5.1 KSTPDT1
PROGRAM: 2: 5.2 KSTPDT2
PROGRAM: 4: 9.1 KMSP-HD

Would appear in the drop down menu as:

79.1 - 5.1 KSTPDT1
79.2 - 5.2 KSTPDT2
79.4 - 9.1 KMSP-HD

and translate to RF = 79, Program = 1, 2, 4...

Re: BTV-Externinator Channel Mapping

Ok, Now I get it. Here is what I see:

SCANNING: 561000000 (us-cable:80, us-irc:80)
LOCK: qam256 (ss=94 snq=100 seq=100)
PROGRAM: 1: 0.0
PROGRAM: 2: 0.0
PROGRAM: 5: 0.0 (encrypted)
PROGRAM: 6: 0.0 (encrypted)

So I'm out of luck for the easy way for sure.

Does anybody have mappings for Cox Communications in Hampton Roads, VA?

I'll post mine once I figure them out.

One other thing, I do find that when I open a bunch of the non-encrypted
channel/program combinations in VLC, that I get nothing, no video or audio even though the signal quality bar is high. Is this to be expected?

Re: BTV-Externinator Channel Mapping

OK, the number of channels I have been able to "discover" with VLC is pitiful. I found 2 networks, a few shopping channels and some on demand preview channels.

I went through every combination that was available in HDHomeRun Config.

So my deduction here is that Cox Cable has chosen to encrypt most of their digital programming, even the parts that aren't considered premium. Someone please chime in if you have any ideas or think I may be doing something wrong.
