Smooth as glass HDTV

So I'm looking for some examples of setups that play HDTV w/o any problems. Any details would be a help. BTV or BTV Link

Re: Smooth as glass HDTV

Smooth as GLASS. FX5200 40% CPU @ 1920x1080. Details in the sig. Maybe this will help...

I had predictable jerkiness on a few channels. All five available channels showed 98% signal strength. Then, I went out and bought a better antenna, now all five channels are as smooth as buttah. They also show 98% signal strength.

I think a number of problems might be avoided if there was a better way to quantify signal quality.

Your polls needs an option for the humble yet loveable FX5200...it's still quite servicable in the HD arena!

Re: Smooth as glass HDTV

Smooth here as well with Nvidia 6600 / DVICO FusionHDTV 5 Lite and the antenna that came bundled with the DVICO card (from the Snapstream store). I am in a good location for receiving my local HD channels as well.

Re: Smooth as glass HDTV

I just ordered that antenna - also goes by the brand name Zenith. I read rave reviews about it on Amazon.

Re: Smooth as glass HDTV

AMD X2 4400 running @ 1GHz (AMD Cool&Quiet low power mode), ATI Radeon X300 Fanless, DVICO HDTV tuner. Smooth HDTV playback of 1920x1080i stream from .tp using VLC and 1920x1080i from mpeg2 using WMP files extracted using VideoRedo.

CPU utilization is 45% on this dual core system when playing back using VLC and WMP, and 35% when playing back using DVICO's player.

Re: Smooth as glass HDTV

I think this poll is flawed. I can get smooth playback using the Fushion software but not with BTV. So I did not vote because none of the options fit. From what I have read a lot of users get less than perfect playback of HD using BTV. Playback is watchable just minor studders on virtualy all HD channels in live TV. I have tried several codecs and nvidia pure video seems to work best. I wish there was a way to use the fushion codec in BTV as I think it night be better. My configuration is in my sig.

Ditto, Silky smooth playback in any application but BTV.

I can get smooth playback using overlay and 3D Acceleration. However, with 3D Acceleration, if I hit any of the buttons rev, ff, skip, or prev, playback is ruined - it becomes with trails.

Same here, silky smooth playback with the DVICO software. Plenty of stutters in BTV 4.1.

Re: Smooth as glass HDTV

I got an AT HDTV wonder and a Nvidia 6800GS.

1080i playback is perfect in the ati application but stutters in BTV. I discovered the playback improved considerably after removing the ATI hdtv software, but still a little jittery. BTV setup wizard reports 100% strength on the 1080i signal.

The 1080i broadcast tower is literally 7 miles from my house in line of sight. Two other stations broadcasting 480i are 40 miles away and they come in smooth in all applications.

Re: Smooth as glass HDTV

I see differences by stations, but my signal is over 98% on all stations.

I am running a bodaciously undersized ati aiw 7500. I get flawless playback however I will get stuttering under some situations

If my cpu resources overload (typically 35-75% on live hdtv) I drop a frame occasionally.

If I am watching livetv whenever I make taxing resource evente like skip forward, I believe I cause dropped frames in the recording. IF I let the show record undisturbed, no stuttering is recorded.

I have to use ATI codec and overlay, all others stutter like crazy.

I tried the fx5200 with a variety of codecs, none give as good a performance as my old ati.

Re: Smooth as glass HDTV

It took a while but I finally have BTV4.1 dialed in. I am currently using the cateye Vbox USB. To get the system working I had to (1) buy a powered hub for the cateye because it does not work of the PC's powered usb ports; (2) Upgrade from an ATI X600 video card to an Nvidia 6600 GT (the ATI's 9600 based chips stutter on overlay mode and my experience is that overlay mode is the key to smooth HDTV); (3) install a separate 250 GB harddrive and format it with 64Kb partitions. Re-partitioning the harddrive was the final act that made the jitters and stutters disappear. Good luck.
