UTF-8 support in the program guide

Does BTV support UTF-8 listings in it's program guide? I'm using XMLTV Importer 2.6 to import this (http://tv.srk.fer.hr/servisxmltv.php) XMLTV listing which is encoded in UTF-8, yet all the national characters are lost in the program guide (they are actually displayed as wierd characters).

The Importer is XML compliant : that is it will load an XML document and parse it with the information provided by this document. After conversion the Importer does submit to BTV XML files encoded with UTF-8. So yes BTV supports UTF-8.

If you got wrong characters, that's surely because your XMLTV document does not provide the charset it use and is not an unicode file.

To check this open your XMLTV file in Notepad and look at the first line, it should be :

<?xml version="1.0"?>

This declaration imply that the XMLTV file is an unicode file (16 bits characters instead of 8bits) and if you choose "File" / "Save As" in Notepad, the "Save As" dialog box should display "Unicode" in the "Encoding" drop down list (if it is anything else including UTF-8 and your document contains characters other than ASCII ones, this is not good).

If you XMLTV document is really encoded in UTF-8, the first line should be :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

You have then three options to correct the file :
  • add the missing "encoding" declaration to the file
  • save the file as unicode
  • contact the XMLTV grabber authors to tell them to add the "encoding" declaration

Edit : I looked the XMLTV file, it claims to be UTF-8 but I think it is ISO-8859-2 instead.

Regards,
Stéphane.
