What sort of fault tolerance has been added to 2.0?

I'd kinda like to know this too. Can snapstream restart itself if it bombs?

I agree. That would be a great feature.

I third that.
Sometimes the interface works but I need to reboot the computer because something else is wrong. (I get back and an error message about SSW is on the screen yet the web server still works. Just won't record) I would love to reboot my computer remotely. ------------------ Current Projects: Rav4MP3 Snapstream Support Page

PBMax: You should be able to re-boot your PC remotely by using Remote Desktop. You also need to be using MS's new XP menu style, not the old Windows Classic theme.
It is after all the app that's crashed on you, not the OS. |

Well I'm behind a firewall that I can't control so remote desktop probably won't work. I use VNC now within my local LAN but can't access it outside it.

you can specify the port for vnc if im not mistaken, so why not change it to something thats open like 80 or 443 and then try to re-boot...

one more thing, i believe the port for remote desktop, also known as citrix winframe, also known as terminal services, is 3387, you could try to have your network admin open it...

I asked about this a couple of months back, and that's why I wanted to ask this again. I'd like some way to detect that the SS has crashed, so that I can restart it. I can just write a small program that polls the state of SSW and if there's been a crash, then I'll do whatever i need to to get it up and running again. Some tests I've thought of:
- monitor the applicaitons log, but I've never found a log of an SSW crash yet. - Use tlist.exe, but this only works on 2KServer - See if the size of sstemp has changed in the last minute. if not, save it, and restart ssw (or run something that resets the driver state of your tuner card first) The biggest problem that I've encountered is that if SSW crashes or if the encoder crashes, I can't fully restart SS without getting rid of the "your application has crashed" dialog, which _requires_ user input. Does anyone know how to disable these dialogs and make the system just log the occurance? As for needing to reboot the machine, if you find your system needs that after a crash this same fault recovery system can do that for you automatically using one of the commandline reboot utilities. But for now I need to figure out how to get around this crash dialog box. Conrad |

I thought you can specify a port in VNC too. I can't find the setting. Remote desktop works great. I just helped out a friend with it. I forgot I was on his computer! You know how to setup a specific port in VNC? Also the Admins will not listen to any student about opening up ports on their network.

Found what I was looking for here. I should be able to write a fault detection batch file that can be run as scheduled application on Windows 2000. I'll do that next week after finals.
Should make PVS more useful to me if I can count on it even more. I'll post it here as soon as I have. Conrad [This message has been edited by Conrad (edited 12-11-2001).] |

under advanced setting for winvnc, if you didnt already know you can also run it as a service...
"PortNumber specifies the port number to be used for VNC. You will need to disable AutoPortSelect to use this. Local or Global per-user setting" Quote:

I still see no advanced settings. Just the default settings and running VNC in app mode. Maybe you have a newer version of VNC?

In order to change the default port number for VNC which is 5800, you need to uncheck the AUTO button and input the port number.. They did it a funky way in which you start with 5800 as the start point and add or subtrace a number to come to the port number you want.. in other words, to have WinVNC listen to port 5000 instead of port 5800, you'd specify -800 in the display field.. this takes the default of 5800 and applies your (-800) to result in 5000 being the port that WinVNC listens to.. The client and server work the same way..
For instance.. I have 3 PCs on my LAN and I have setup my firewall to listen and forward port 5800 to my PC 5801 to my 2nd PC and 5802 to my 3rd machine.. I then can connect to all 3 machines using VNC.. To connect to my first machine, I use the AUTO display or 0 setting.. I then use 1 and 2 respectively as the DISPLAY number in order to connect to the other 2 machines.. So in closing, in order to change the VNC port to something such as 80 (which is usually open on most firewalls), you would setup both the CLIENT and the SERVER to use DISPLAY -5720 (5800-5720=80) when you use the client make sure you uncheck AUTO display and input -5720. I hope this helps you all. Ron rong@mpinet.net (feel free to email me if I made this too confusing). |

Conrad - did you ever figure out a batch file to restart snapstream in case of a crash? I wish i could just grep the task manager and restart snapstream if it isn't listed. But noooo. hehe
Amit - what is the progress on fault tolerance and running as a service in 2.0? - Matt |
