Skipping Commercials

Im not sure how the skip commercial (scene change) works...When I activate it and playback the recording I still see the commercials...I assume that the original recording mpg file is NOT modified?.. the scene change info is apparently saved in a separate file...how do I utilize this info to watch the pgm without commercials...or better still modify the original mpg file to no longer have commercials...
