Re: All Users Please Post Current Deals/Sales Here
Awesome deal on a potential HTPC Marchine (esp. Link) here. The case may not be sexy, (although it's not bad
) but for a cheap link machine with kick-arse AMD dual-core goodness, it'd be tough to beat. Throw in memory and a video card and be set. Quantities appear to be limited.

Re: All Users Please Post Current Deals/Sales Here
Not sure if this is allowed, but I usually check a site that has lots of tech deals regarding computer hardware and such. It is not a site like fatwallet or similair, but it is on the Anandtech forums, under the Hot Deals.
Link: http://forums.anandtech.com/categori...=40&entercat=y Found most of my deals for my HTPC build on there. I usually check it a couple times per day just to make sure I do not miss anything. MikeG |

Re: All Users Please Post Current Deals/Sales Here
Western Digital 500gb Sata - $130 after $10 rebate at Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136073
This seems to be the new 3 platter technology, model WD5000AAKS, vs the 4 platter WD5000KS (they have an open box of that for $135 w/o rebate). Did a little research before ordering mine, most specs look comparable, this one should be slightly quieter than the 4 platter version, and is close to the RE2 drive that sells there for $160 (also 4 platter) From what I've read, the RE2 gives some advantages for raid, and is marginally faster for seek and bootup - http://techreport.com/reviews/2006q3...s/index.x?pg=1 (this compares the two 4 platter drives, not the 3 platter AAKS) Also the two SE16's have 3 year OEM warranties while the RE2 has a 5 year. (I posted all the extra info in case there was a discussion, I'm still on a SATA learning curve, but I've been happy with all my WD IDE drives)

Re: All Users Please Post Current Deals/Sales Here
I'm up to 6 WD500 SATAs and counting. Only one of mine is the WD500AAKS, but my case fan is too loud to really notice any difference -- temp is about the same.
My oldest WD500 is about 15 months and every time I buy one I do consider going for the WD500YS but the only drive failure I ever had was OEM (not WD) so I can't seem to bring myself to stop buying the retail drives from brick and morter stores. Reading all of the war stories out there has me convinced the hardships of shipping those not-so-well packaged drives is the root of problems (and end-users not controlling heat). Interesting review. Thanks for the link. I honestly didn't think there was any difference between the two drives other than power consumption and warranty, but I guess they are actually more different than I thought. I think I'm goint to go ahead and switch over to the RE2 for my next 6 drives. :-) Cheers, Bryan

Re: All Users Please Post Current Deals/Sales Here
Ok, not to hijack this thread, but installed my wd500aaks last night. My Asrock SATA driver seemed to be irritating (had me relink all my ATi wdm drivers, not sure why) but go thte drive recognized, formatted, partitioned, all seems well. Noise is as quiet as my other drives if not more. One question, do I need to do anything with jumpers? Drive was OEM so no info, and just saw general info on WD sata jumpers. I read something about a jumper for standby but not sure if it applies. I am hooking up as a single (non-raid) to may sataII connector.

Re: All Users Please Post Current Deals/Sales Here
i didn't use but one jumper and that degrades the drive to sata150 since my system don't support sata300. i have been very pleased with this drive and runs considerably cooler than my previous drives(i replaced two drives with this one drive.)
as for the standby jumper IIRC this allows the computer to start without spinning up the drive as to save power on bootup. if this is the only drive installed this setting would be useless. though this sucks i bought this just before the rebate started.
