the future of QAM recording (i think) has been sited
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070...e-networks.html
it looks like there is finally an approved DRM method so that encrypted cable TV can be recorded and streamed in the house. Presumably the DRM in the link above will be supported in the new 8634-based network media players (sometime in the next year, I assume). this is the holy grail here in the US......encrypted TV programs cannot be played anywhere, right now, except on the same vista PC that makes the recording (so it has been a total flop, of course). this breaks the stranglehold on playback and opens the door for network media players to work even for encrypted cable channels. since the cable TV systems are heading towards encryption of all but the local channels (which the FCC requires to be in the clear), this is of supreme importance. without this, i feared for the future of network media players as a medium for playback of TV in the US where cable is dominant. what does this mean for BTV? i'm no expert but I assume this could mean that BTV could record 5C encrypted cable in the future, with playback and streaming around the house to devices that would contain cablecards..........it works for me. i'd record in BTV and stream it around the house to network media players that would have cablecards plugged in for the security function. maybe a cablecard in the pc would work for those of you who watch their programming within the BTV products. HOOOOOOORRRRRRAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY!!

Re: the future of QAM recording (i think) has been sited
i wonder how long it will take for someone to hack it...DTCP-IP
it seems like everyone time they come up with new encryptions, rights managements, etc, it always gets hacked...
