Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

I performed an upgrade from BTV 3.x to 4.0 the first day that it was released and had my tailfeathers burned: Everything fell apart on the server. Therefore, it's time to be more prudent.

This is a thread of experiences as people upgrade from 4 to the 4.1 version released recently.

Please detail both good and bad. Also please detail if you installed over 4.0 or did a complete uninstall and re-install.

Also, since this seems to be mentioned in many threads, if you had jerkiness and jitters in 4.0, did it go away in 4.1?

Thanks in advance,

MJC

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

Just done a re-install (although kept settings) as I was having a few issues with Showsqueeze never completing WMV conversions.

So far, all OK, just trying out the showsqueeze (DIVX first then will try WMV)

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

I did both a fresh install and an upgrade over current - it went completely without incident in both cases. Working fine.

The major improvement that I've found is that the PureVideo decoder doesn't barf on HD content - stuttering and crashing the ViewScape (ultimately this is an Nvidia issue, SS found a way to work around it.)

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

I installed on top of 4.0 with no issues. I still see the "skips" in both live TV and playback, which is disappointing. About every 10 minutes or so there is a brief "jump". I guess I need to open a trouble ticket now. I kept hoping the new release would address this issue. I did not see this in the 4.0 betas or 3.7.4.

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

I did the upgrade for both BTV and Link. So far so good. A little bit a of a surprise when I installed BTV, a program called Firefly mini installed with it. No documentation anywhere on it, which is kind of typical for snapstream but annoying none the less. We'll know more after a few days of showsqueezing to see if they fixed the divx issue.

Short answer, it upgrades from 4.0 well without much issues.

They still haven't fixed the web interface problem with setting up recordings for showsqueeze. I only see options available for windows media, there's nothing to either select the showsqueeze type (wmv or divx) and none of the divx qualities are listed. One bug at a time I guess...

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

upgraded BTV and BTVLink. 1 error messge on a file for my "ATI remote plugin" but that's my fault, should have closed the applet before upgrading.

Other than that. no obvious problems yet. Time will tell.

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

I have upgraded from 4.0 to three different 4.1 beta's and now to the latest 4.1 final release without any problems that effected my system. Thats not to say that I did not have some small issues with the beta's but as far as I can tell so far this is a good release.

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

I uninstalled version 4.1 completely and went back to version 3.4. I have had numerous problems with the audio that from the forums it seems a number of people are having. The fix I found restored audio to my recordings at the cost of my video. So I have a choice of watching a silent video or staring at a black screen while I listen to the show. I would normally assume that I have some hardware issues, except for the fact that the previous version I was using worked beautifully. I am sure there is a way to fix the problems that I am having, but I think it is ridiculous that I should even have to think about this. I believe that if your computer meets the requirements for the application, then it should work the first time when you install it. I should not have to spend hours installing and uninstalling, reading forum threads and waiting for tech support everytime I upgrade. They need to seriously work on their product, so that people like me who are not computer experts can enjoy what they paid for.

What do you think this is? Tivo?? hehe.

Absolutely have to agree though, of all the software I have ever owned, i've never had more trouble than with BTV. Yet I continue to send them money, and enter trouble tickets, and settle for peformance that is just ok.

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

Firefly Mini is a new IR remote control that we'll begin selling in the next couple of weeks. Both Beyond TV 4.1 and Beyond Media 1.1.1 add support for Firefly Mini so it'll be a relatively seamless roll-out when we begin shipping it.

On the tvtv issue, are you sure what you are seeing is a 4.1 thing? We just received notice last week (while CDs for Beyond TV 4.1 were being burned) that they had changed some of the tvtv services that we use. So we're figuring out what will be involved with fixing it in Beyond TV 4.2.

MJC, thanks for creating this thread.

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

I posted about this in another thread, but hopefully it'll get more eye here.

I just upgraded to 4.1 last night and tried using showsqueeze to convert some recorded programs to divx, as opposed to wmv, which I'd been using before. Much to my, well, shock and horror, the shows that had been converted to divx were half the length they should be; half-hour shows were 15-16 minutes, and hourlong shows were now 24 minutes. They were not sped up to double-speed, however, which was what I'd originally assumed. Instead, ShowSqueeze decided that I only needed half of the program and chopped the original recording in half, making a completely arbitrary decision.

What gives?

Sweet! Looking forward to it. I didn't get an email announcement of the latest versions of BTV and BM. Going to upgrade when I can this weekend.

Re: Experiences Upgrading BTV 4.0->4.1

I upgraded on top of 4.0 (this machine had 3.7.x on it and hasn't been rebuilt) and thus far no problems. Though it was my own misreading of the release notes that prompted the upgrade. I thought HDTV content was going to be able to be showsqueezed but I misread and it's only smartskipped. Oh well.
