Running BTV and Sage on the same server

I've been considering my options for a media extender for the bedroom TV and have been trying to identify an extender (other than a Link client, of which I already have two) that will do what I want, namely streaming my BTV SD and HD recordings and my DVD vobs. The Sage HD extender looks like the ticket but it needs to have the Sage software running on the server. However, even with the software cost, the extender is still a cost effective solution. But, are there any issues running the Sage server (not using any of the PVR functionality) along with BTV on the same system?

Re : Running BTV and Sage on the same server

As long as you don't try to share the same capture device on both, it should be fine. There is a thread on Sage's forum about running it without any capture device. But should you assign one capture device to Sage TV, make sure BTV isn't monitoring that recording folder...

Re: Running BTV and Sage on the same server

I'm actually running SageTV (configured with 2 tuners) and BeyondTV (configured with 1 tuner) on the same system. Everything seemed to work ok at first glance, but then I realized that BTV wasn't changing the channel (I use the serial tuner plugin to send the channel change to my DirecTV D11 box using the null modem-->USB setup). After a lot of tinkering, I've found that BTV will change channels and function normally ONLY when it starts (initial load) before Sage service gets started. Kinda weird. I can uderstand locking tuners, but I don't know why BTV wouldn't be able to send commands over a COM port just because some other app is loaded, especially when that other app isn't using that COM port.

Re: Running BTV and Sage on the same server

Thanks, just what I needed to know. Looks like the extender and Sage are in my future...as soon as it is back in stock. I will probably try using SageTV with firewire only to see how it stacks up against my current BTV + Externinator setup.
