37" LCD.. 120Hz or 60Hz for Bluray?

I am looking at 37" LCD tvs and definitely going with a 1080p model. However I am torn between 120Hz and 60Hz. I know that Bluray movies and other film are typically at 24fps and 60Hz is not a multiple of that whereas 120Hz is. So a Bluray film could look better at 120Hz because its not using the 3:2 pulldown but just having the frames duplicated or interpolated depending on the motion enhancement. So does anyone have an opinion on this? Is the 120Hz worth it? I'm looking at LG and Samsung TVs

Will you be able to tell Blu-Ray from DVD on a 37" TV?

Definitely. It's just the matter of whether the judder would be noticeable with a 37" TV with 60Hz or 120Hz.

I have a 52" Samsung 120hz model. The playback on that set is much better (especially on pans) at 1080p24hz than 1080p60hz. I would think that the 37" would be the same in the 24hz vs 60hz department as we're talking about native frame rate here as opposed to resolution. If the cost is not vastly different - go with the 120hz model.

EDIT: I run my TV with the motion enhancement truned off.

What about 1080p vs 720p at 37"? Will it make a difference, even with a native 1080p signal? Or is it just worth sticking with 720p and saving money?

On a 32" I don't see much use for 1080p over 720p. BUT, I have a 40" Sony that's 720p and at that size it really should have been 1080p IMO. I'm not sure which way I'd go at 37".

It's like dots per inch on a printer. The image is just more smooth and detailed at 1080p. I personally can see the difference - not everyone seems to though.

How far away do you sit from these sets? I'd be sitting at about 8 feet away

My sitting distance from the 52" (living room) averages about 10'. For the 40" (den), I sit about 7' feet away. For the 32" (bedroom), I'm about 12' away.

I probably sit closer that is generally recommended - except in the bedroom. But I like to be immersed in the movies I watch.

Re: 37" LCD.. 120Hz or 60Hz for Bluray?

Thanks for the info. I have to go compare the 720 vs 1080 sets again.. and the 60hz vs 120hz again.. ugh! I just know that I have to stick with a 37" so that at least helps my decision. The price difference is huge though:

LG 37LH20 720p 60Hz 30k:1 DCR = $600
LG 37LF11 1080p 60Hz 30k:1 DCR = $700
LG 37LH30 1080p 60Hz 50k:1 DCR = $900 (was $750 a few weeks ago at BB but not anymore )
Samsung LN37B650 1080p 100k:1 DCR 120Hz = $1150

It's for a family room, minimal sun/glare and 8-10' seating. Mainly for watching TV shows and movies.

Re: 37" LCD.. 120Hz or 60Hz for Bluray?

This will make you sick, the LG 37LH30 was $649.99 until it sold out yesterday or today at NEWEGG. Free ship, no tax...how can you beat that?
The TOSHIBA REGZA 37" ThinLine 720p LCD HDTV w/ CineSpeed - 37CV510U has 720p and is still in stock at $549.
Personally, I'd continue to shop around especially for deals like this at Newegg. Not everything is the cheapest there, but I trust their business practices more than most.
Also, at your 37" mark, you're on the border of what they say can be observed when watching HD. The judder is a real issue though, they do have 240hz models too, but they're still insanely priced.
