.AVI Video file not BTV compatible

I have some training CD's that have .avi files on them that play in VLC and through their software, but they don't play in BTV. I get a message that the file is corrupt.
Do I need to somehow convert these or install some additional codecs? I hate to install codecs if I don't have to especially on my BTV server. Could I install just the codecs on a link computer and install the codecs there if necessary?

Re: .AVI Video file not BTV compatible

Doesn't VLC show the video properties of the file playing? Try Gspot (GSpot Codec Information Appliance). It will specify what decoder a video is encoded with.

Re: .AVI Video file not BTV compatible

I didn't know that VLC could show that information. I thought that when you installed a codec it was for every audio/video viewer that would run on a computer? I tried this GSPOT and it did say what my codec was. I found the codec loaded it on my workstation and Media Player now plays it. I'll have to try BTV in the morning, but looks like it will work for me.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.

BTW - the training CD's are from TRAIN SIGNAL which has a lot of computer and network videos and I've been fairly impressed with the quality of the training material.

Re: .AVI Video file not BTV compatible

Well that was the MS understanding of how applications would use decoders, however, some apps like VLC have them self-contained within the application to avoid the hassle of installing them.

If you installed the decoder (if you noticed, I hate using the word "codec"), it should play now in BTV, more to the point that I know that SS uses the MS method of using system decoders from the OS. No probs on the tip, glad it helped
