Re: Pissy about SnapStream
Good news... I'm not as pissy anymore since I got the ClearQAM and HD-PVR working again with the drivers ZetaVu recommended. I'm still pissy about the other things though

Re: Pissy about SnapStream
I forget, do you have the stb where you can't lock the output at 1080 or 720? I suspect that might be causing the lockups and something in the way BTV vs Sage does might be responsible for the issues. (assuming you don't get similar lockups with Sage). I assume if you can lock output you've tried both 1080 and 720, and you've tried both spdif and analog inputs for the audio. Probably not a bad idea to try those out with 1.053. (also not a bad idea to use hwclear first then isntall the drivers, and make sure you run btv setup). Also I assume you are using the arcsoft decoder for playback, overlay, and set your recording quality for H,264 at default quality (7000 I think).

I have to see if I can lock out my STB. I looked up the manual and it has some settings that I have to check out. Also, I don't use SPDIF; I use the Audio Line.

Re: Pissy about SnapStream
I forget what the default settings are in BTV, but I've been using those since the beta, not sure if it makes a difference, I had custom settings in the beta and at the time reverting to default fixed an issue. Now I just don't want to change anything since it works so well.
The fixed output I think is critical, but then again if Sage can accommodate it then it is something SS needs to look at in the next beta. That and the 4 second pause after tuning channels would fix a lot of the shortcomings I think. What's your stb?

Re: Pissy about SnapStream
You can lock at 1080 or 720, pages 28 and 30, just make sure you don't select native. Is yours set at native? Deselect all formats but one.

EDIT: Got it locked out at 720p for now until I get the 37" 1080p LCD TV I want.

It's long so I broke it into two parts with part 2 arriving late tonight. I think comparing the linux version of SageTV placeshifter to the Windows version of BTV/MediaPortal was a mistake as SageTV really has only built a Linux Server and hasn't done much with the placeshifter version due to lack of interest. I've been trying to push them into doing a Linux Client (Like link) version, but most would prefer to have an extender which runs on a tiny version of linux anyway. Regardless the post shows some of the things that might deter someone comfortable with BeyondTV from switching to SageTV... And as always was a great guest-post by ZetaVu!

Re: Pissy about SnapStream
Actually I compared the windows versions of Sage and BTV to each other, and the linux version of Sage to the BTV linux placeshifter mod with vlc (using placeshifter to launch vlc rather than silverlight, which isn't up yet in linux, moonlight 2). So I did my best to compare apples to apples.
I can understand the lack of interest in porting to linux, most people using linux are running mythtv, so why pay for Sage or BTV? Well, my argument is you get a superior product, and you get reliable guide data. Since then I've been rebutted with a lot of "free as in beer" options for guide data, which I have not had a chance to explore yet. I've farmed some of this off to two friends, one using mythtv, one using Media Portal exclusively. When I get some time I might play with these and come up with another article for ya. Of course both Media Portal and mythtv are very tedious to setup (compared to btv), but if someone ever made a US specific installer that simplified the process...

By the way, as a full-time SageTV user who has used BeyondTV quite a bit in his life (that's me by the way) I still consider BeyondTV to be easier to set up and learn. Lots of other things to factor in, but there is no question about that fact.
