Acer 5100 and S/PDIF output

My Acer 5100 laptop has a Realtek codec installed. The Realtek options window gives the option to output digital audio to S/PDIF out. But the front panel has only 3 sockets, microphone, line-in and a headphone jack socket. There are no other sockets such as a co-ax output anywhere else.
What I want to know, is it possible that one of the three front sockets can be re-configured to give S/PDIF out? I read somewhere that someone's laptop had a dual purpose socket, headphone/S/PDIF. How would I know?
Or is it a function which cannot be realised, ie spurious?
Anyone with a similar Acer with S/PDIF, is it marked on the headphone jack?

Re: Acer 5100 and S/PDIF output

I have a 5100 and it doesn't come with SPDIF. I really don't know if you could add it or if the motherboard actually would support it. Remember, the Realtek software is relatively generic and not specific to any one mobo. These are 5 year old units, produced before the real upsurge in multimedia. I don't know if they would help since support ended long ago, but you might try asking Acer about the possibilities.

Also, if you're interested and haven't already done it, the specs on that laptop show it'll only take 512MB Ram, but it actually will take 1GB modules to upgrade to 2GB and it really makes a difference in performance.
