Time Warner oh how I dislike you

Today I wrote a rant about time warner on my blog. Here's a quick summary:
1. Not enough unencrypted QAM channels
2. TW doesn't understand or even seem to know what firewire is (firewire cable box that is)
3. Their DVR boxes stink. Thank goodness I have BeyondTV.
4. Their service is poor.
5. Not enough HD channels

For a somewhat funny (but true) explanation of why Time Warner doesn't have many HD channels and doesn't seem to understand why that might be important, read the post.

Cheers

Re: Time Warner oh how I dislike you

Well, just be glad you're not in Canada, where they are not requirred to offer active Firewire, don't have to carry "locals" unencrypted, don't have to support cable cards and so on... At least your FCC tries to protect a little bit the consumers, here the CRTC only protects the interest of the big conglomerates...

Re: Time Warner oh how I dislike you

About 4 weeks ago Time Warner changed their cable lineups overnight, completely changing the QAM locations of their HD channels and taking away a couple of unencrypted channels. I noticed the signals also changed from HRC to standard. Bye-bye, HDNet. Very annoying.

But at least I figured it out that same day and got things remapped for my HDHR just in time. My in-laws who live in the same neighborhood didn't have working cable TV for a week, except in one room.

They have digital cable with set top boxes in several rooms. The boxes were just dead, except for one that worked for some reason. They kept calling and never got a human to answer the phone. The next weekend my father-in-law happened to see a TW van in the neighborhood so he sweet talked the guy into coming over to his house. Turned out he had to flip a switch in the boxes, which I suspect was changing them from HRC to standard cable.

Idiots...

I also live in the KC metro area. I have had Time Warner for years and truely hate them. I have been looking into Everest cable company (http://www.everestkc.com/). I called and they should be in my neighborhood within 6 months. I can't wait to dump Time Warner...

I would LOVE to have access to everest. Unfortunately I'm north of the river and they don't seem to have any plans in the near future to expand there. AT&T would likely be here with cable tv (like fios) sooner but I'm not sure they would be any better than TW.

Re: Time Warner oh how I dislike you

I live in north Johnson County. Everest has been slowly installing their infrastructure around here.

I have always heard that you will know it when Everest moves into your neighborhood. Time Warner will all of a sudden significantly reduce your monthly cable bill and try and talk you into signing a contract to keep the new price.

Give it time and there will eventually be cable competition north of the river.

Re: Time Warner oh how I dislike you

My new place is supposed to have Comcast which I hear leaves a LOT of unencrypted QAM channels for its users. I am hoping the part of LA I will be in has these left open.

Re: Time Warner oh how I dislike you

Ba$tards just removed another unencrypted channel from the Plano (north Dallas) lineup. Now it's locals and Discovery HD only...

Re: Time Warner oh how I dislike you

I used to have Adelphia cable. Oh how I loved Adelphia. That is, until Time Warner bought Adelphia. Since then, we've had nothing but glitches, poor customer service and thier broadband package is somehow half the speed of Adelphia's. How did this happen? All of the infrastructure was there. How can service get worse??
