I need IE 6

anyone know where I can get a copy of IE6?

my wife's laptop has been updated to IE7, which requires her to create an account with Google to use the bookmark feature. How wonderful is that?!

I can't get her to use Firefox because her message boards don't look right with it.

Anyway, I need to uninstall IE7 and get IE6 back on there before she drives to Seattle and punches Bill Gates in the face.

thanks

You can't just uninstall IE7?

Re: I need IE 6

There are instructions on Mircosoft's website on how to revert back to IE6. Also, there is a registery setting that prevents Windows Updates from installing IE7.

Re: I need IE 6

If you uninstall IE7, your system is supposed to revert to IE6. Before doing it, you might want to check the Microsoft Internet Explorer home page and/or at this group where there is a lot of IE7 info posted. http://groups.google.com/group/micro...plorer.general

I'm curious what that means. Google's bookmark feature or IE7's?

IE7's bookmarks require a Google account to be created in order to view them.

I didn't want to uninstall IE7 unless I had an IE6 installer file. I'll read the google group site. I have not had any luck finding what I want at Microsoft's site.

Not on any of my computers. I think you have another problem.

really? when I click 'favorites' there is a message that says we must register a n account with Google to view bookmarks. We can open up the 'favorites' folder and use them from there, but the old favorites drop menu funtionality is gone

what could my problem be? I am so frustrated with this.

Re: I need IE 6

do you have google toolbar installed? Sounds like it's tieing into your Favorites menu . It doesn't sound like a IE7 problem because I am using my Favorites menu with no problem whatsover.

Re: I need IE 6

I've got IE7 and it's definitely not asking me for Google accounts when using Favorites.

Did a bit of searching - are you sure you're not using Google Bookmarks instead of the normal Favorites?

You might be clicking something else instead (Favorites is the star at the far left of the tabs bar).

Re: I need IE 6

IE7 here also, and no prompts for a Google account to access Favorites. Such a prompt would be very unlikely. Microsoft and Google are arch-rivals. They'd be more likely to try to freeze each other out.

Now if the Google Toolbar is installed and if it has some sort of "Favorites" feature, that might cause the prompt. Maybe the same for Google Desktop Search? I've never used either.

If you do have Google Toolbar, make sure you have a recent update of it designed for IE7. The one that worked with IE6 is said to cause problems in IE7. Same for all other toolbars and browser helper objects (Tools > Manage Add-ons).

Another possibility: are you using IE7 obtained directly from Microsoft, or a "branded" version? I suppose repackagers could add nonstandard stuff.

Re: I need IE 6

OK, here is a screenshot.

I am using the MS version of IE7 that came with the MS auto-update

You can see below that the blue star, called bookmarks is near where the old IE favorites were. And there is a new yellow star over to the left that is her old, familar favorites list. Clicking the blue gives the popup shown in the screenshot. I have gone into the settings and hidden the blue star option

thanks for the clue, revenent

Re: I need IE 6

No problem - IE 7 definitely takes a bit of getting used to.

I still miss and hit the back button every now and then when I want the File menu!

Re: I need IE 6

right click anywhere somewhere in the gray area, and click "menu bar" so you can see the " File Edit Favorites Tools Help " menus. I don't know why MS decided to hide it by default b/c it has confused a lot of people.

It's not the visibility, it's the location.

I'm still used to having the menu at the top!

Re: I need IE 6

Not trying to start a flame war, but why do you use IE? Firefox is, IMO a far superior browser.
