disable windows logon?

My computer is prompting me for a windows login after about 30 minutes into watching a show. I have been searching for solutions and they all are for disabling login at bootup.

This is more like a screensaver or time-out thing going on. But the screensaver is set to 'none'. I have no idea why this started happening.

Re: disable windows logon?

Not sure what you mean, are you talking about a login for a domain you are attached to?
Technically, you should not be prompted for any login after you have logged into the local account on the machine.

Re: disable windows logon?

it is the XP login for the PC. blue background, a square chess piece icon with my name next to it. like this I have it disabled for startup, but it is now appearing on its own.

It is locking the PC, so only my name and password can unlock it.

Re: disable windows logon?

i checked the "control userpasswords2" and i do not have the login box checked. It does not prompt me on bootup, only after using it for a while. So while I'm watching a show, the computer will lock and show the login screen.

I'll try TweakUI to see if it has a way to prevent it. this is so weird, i've never seen this before.

That sounds like a screen saver was turned on. Maybe a power saver setting ?

Re: disable windows logon?

i just checked power management and the only thing checked is 'prompt for password when computer wakes from standby'. I unchecked it, even though this is not during a wake.

I don't see anything in TweakUI that could help.

Coming out of the screensaver is considered a wake...

what's your number?

i feel so inadequate, i've spent the weekend searching forums and calling friends. No one has ever heard of this. Could it be a virus of some sort? I regularly scan for viruses and adware and it hasn't been detected.

Re: disable windows logon?

Well, here is an idea. If you're running WinXP try using the system restore prior to past Friday and see what happens. You won't lose anything but it'll revert the system settings back to the last restore point. It depends how often the system reboots which is when it'll take a quick snapshot.

Re: disable windows logon?

Sounds like you have an network share that it is trying to access, do you have a server? If you have not properly mapped the drives you will get a network login prompt when it tried to reconnect the drives.

Re: disable windows logon?

But that wouldn't lock the screen ?

I wonder, do you have anyone doing remote desktop control of your pc - either intentionally or otherwise? If someone logs in remotely to a non server os it will lock the screen locally.

Re: disable windows logon?

i can't restore because I never set a restore point. (i know, i know....)

it is not pointing to a server, but is connected to my home network

the only remote access is me trying to troubleshoot it, using logmein.com

But network usage and remote access do not correlate with the timeouts that are happening.
