CPU Comparison Chart

I'm planning to upgrade my HTPC, and wondering if anyone has any comments on this chart:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_20...=884&chart=441

Is the "HDTV Playback" test likely to be respresentative of running BTV?

One thing I found very interesting is how well the E2140 did here. I was looking at the E6400 ($150 range), but it seems to be getting whooped here by a $70 "little brother".

And of course all of them are supposed to overclock quite well.

Re: CPU Comparison Chart

For an HTPC, by the charts, it looks great. I was looking to go with a slower cpu like this one or one of the other Allendale CPUs for a new system, ultimately I got the D6750 from Newegg since it is $195 right now. Some people don't trust the results from Tomshardware, but in general it is a good indication of the performance you should see against other CPUs at least.
I probably wouldn't buy the 2140, and instead get the 2180 for $15 more or so. The important thing in an HTPC is the ability to underclock and reduce your heat and potentially fan noise. The other of course is the amount of time it takes to showsqueeze the programs.
Interestingly, I have the Pressler D930 at the end of that chart, and it runs all of my HTPC needs perfectly...except it runs too hot. It always has even at idle. The new Core 2 CPUs like the 6750 I got run so cold the fan on my Arctic Freezer Pro 7 fan hardly runs except under heavier use.

Re: CPU Comparison Chart

I actually just got the 2140 to use in my server. I have been quite pleased with it so far. At stock the cpu temp was a strangly low 9c. Seemed strange but it was accurate. I OC'd the little guy from 1.6 to 2.2 without breaking a sweat(my ram kept me from going higher).

The other day I was watching an OTA HD program on a link machine, recording an HD show and converting a file from .mkv to .avi and my cpu peaked at 51% usage.

For 75 bucks I can't complain one bit on what this little thing can do. I've read reviews that have said it is an underclocked conroe with less cache. The small amount of cache isn't good for gaming but for what I've been doing with it, it runs great.

Re: CPU Comparison Chart

Yea, 9c is not correct, Run an app like Core Temp and that will give you a more accurate reading of what your cpu is actually doing.

Re: CPU Comparison Chart

Not quite an icebox....but I'm using the oil heat as sparingly as possible. I downloaded core temp and it gave me a reading of 22c which still seems very low(other pc is around 30c) but it is pretty cool in the room to begin with.
