Re: Quad Core On Its Way !

So, um, do you really record 12 shows at the same time?

RAID 0 is crazy.

Also, you're putting together this great system just to watch tv on a 20" monitor?

This made me LOL! Seriously though, I easily record 5 shows at once with maybe peaks of 20% utilization while also watching recorded video. With hardware encoders, it just doesn't put much strain on the CPU - more so on the disk subsystem.

Re: Quad Core On Its Way !

I've recorded 4 simultaneous HD streams while watching a recorded HD program, all off a single 750GB SATA hard drive without any problems.

RAID 0 is asking for trouble.....

It's just TV, RAID 0 is fine unless you consider TV critical data.

Yeah, I do consider my wife's tv programming critical data. I really don't want to hear about her losing shows.

on the drive
The RAID 0 drives will just be used to record with and short term storage, any shows recorded will be transfered to a NAS system on the network.
on the monitor
I'm gonna actually swap it out with a 17". No one is going to watch anything on this system, its just gonna record/serve/store.

1 disk failure = all data gone on RAID array.

Indeed, but for many of us that dont keep hundreds of recording and view TV as take it or leave it, losing all the recordings is no big deal.
