recommend a power supply

I think I want to replace my hair dryer er I mean power supply. Can you recommend a power supply. Main points of interests are low cost, quiet, and reliable. I probably need a decent amount of power. I have two dvd roms, two HD's, and a powered video card.

Re: recommend a power supply

I was actually thinking about getting this one (if you have a nearby Frys or you can order online) I haven't tried it so I can't recommend, and newegg has several hunder reviews on it (it either works great or dies in a year) but for $30 is definitely worth a look.

Re: recommend a power supply

Not a complete expert here, but I wouldn't go with one that has two 80mm fans. I've purchased two in the last few months and both are great (they're for two different computers). The one I remember is this one and it's great (if you can get past the lack of modular cabling): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151023

Re: recommend a power supply

A friend of mine just got one of these and is very satisfied with it. It's $29 after rebate.

Personally, I've had fantastic results with Enermax and Thermaltake PSUs.

Re: recommend a power supply

Well...I have a thermal take ps and it works really well but it is too loud. Now I must admit that I haven't hooked up the fan controller (yet) but I am just less than optomistic. That one from frys looks awesome. Never had a modular design before.

Thanks guys.

Re: recommend a power supply

How much are you willing to spend? If I ever upgrade my PS, I'm going to buy a Corsair CMPSU-620HX. Corsair also has the 520HX (520 watt version for less money). These are expensive but I discovered they're made by Seasonic. Anyway, I read they are very quiet power supplies.

I think keeping down heat is one of the most important things to do with a pvr system. Thus, I would invest in coolers or whatever hardware uses the least amount of heat relative to alternatives.

Re: recommend a power supply

I always read the customer reviews on newegg for new products, and frankly, that Frys Antec PSU sends up too many red flags for me. I notice a definite trend of it failing/dying after a few months for way too many people. Just an observation.

If you don't want another hairdryer, I'd recommend models with a large 120mm fan, as the better ones are whisper quiet, as well as keep relatively cool.

Re: recommend a power supply

Question, can I use the 24 pin power connectors on MB's that have 20 pin connectors or do I need an adaptor (which throws another $10 into the price?) The Fry's one claims to work in both 20 and 24 pin, if the Newegg one does (my current MB is 20 pin, but I want my PS to handle 24) I'd go with that one, definitely better reviews.

I currently have a PS with two 80mm and antoher with a 120mm fan, no difference in sound whatsoever.

Re: recommend a power supply

Check the stats for 20+4 pin connector, which means the last 4 pins can be unattached, allowing it to be used on a 20 pin connector. (And of course reattached when using a 24 pin board). I beleive most 24pin PSUs work this way, but as long as they say 20+4 in their stats, then they certainly do.

Both the Seasonic and Coolmax PSUs from newegg list 20+4Pins.

Re: recommend a power supply

I have this one and it is silent. For the first few days I had it, I wondered if my computer was running. Another nice thing about it is that it has modular cabling. The wires are separate from the PSU so you only plug the ones you need into the PSU to run your components.
