Interesting info found in this SageTV thread:

• Microsoft will provide APIs when Windows Vista is released that will let third party software developers tap into protected PC hardware A/V paths. (That's good to hear.)
• Microsoft also intends to provide APIs for its DRM on non-Windows devices. Could this mean that Windows Media protected content will soon be playable on Linux machines?

Hopefully this means that Snapstream will be able to leverage this to bring cableCARD support to BTV.

I don't like the idea that just Microsoft will have the APIs for cablecard, I know there are a lot of Apple and Linux users that would like to be able to record via cablecards, but honestly, I'm even worried that you have to deal with the whole DRM in the first place with cablecards, unlike standard def tv cards.

You watch, dimes to donuts you will NOT be able to record a movie off any pay channel (HBO, Showtime, etc) now so you can watch it later, or shows like The Sopranos off of HBO. That sort of defeats the whole purpose IMHO.
