will firefly control vista Media Center?

Can a Firefly remote control the Windows Media Center on a vista machine?

I see that it is compatible with media center edition to control BTV, but do not see any information about it being able to control the media center application

The Firefly can control anything. Though the Snapstream software is pretty hard to set up (that is configuring the remote to do what you want or even install the software). So you better have to use a third party software to customize the remote (like my software LM Remote KeyMap - see signature - or EventGhost, Intelliremote, Girder)

Regards,
Stéphane.

Re: will firefly control vista Media Center?

thanks, I'll try those when I get my new remote.

I have one, but the buttons broke and shortly after that I upgraded to vista. Then I discovered BTV did not work with vista, so I've been using a bluetooth mouse to control MC.

Re: will firefly control vista Media Center?

It does not work (for me) after trying it for several days and I consider myself decently computer experienced after working in that field for 25 years. Throw it away - that is what I did. Actually, I will take it out of the trash and take it to the shooting range next weekend - that gives at least a little bit of satisfaction with that piece of junk.

Well the Firefly remote will certainly work if you start fresh and don't install any Snapstream software.

Try to follow these steps for installing the Firefly on Vista (choose the X10 drivers and not the snapstream one).

It is also possible that you have a defective hardware. Without knowing what are your problem exactly, it's difficult to tell...

Regards,
Stéphane.

Re: will firefly control vista Media Center?

Thanks Stephane, I installed just the firefly software and it worked to control the firefly software, but for nothing else. same thing when I install beyondtv-the remote works in there but for no other application. I tried the LM-solution and that works just fine (I am just not open regarding another 15 EUR payment for a fully functional product...).
Bottom line - it is the firefly driver/application combo that was sold and simply does not work and fact is that there is no support provided by snapstream - if it was worth it, perfect case for a class action lawsuit...

You don't have to pay if you don't want. LM Remote KeyMap or any other third party products allows you to customize the remote the way you want (my software is just easier to use)

The Firefly software was outdated even when it was brand new : the profiles to make the remote work with different applications was included with the installation with no easy way to update them (software update / download etc...)

Though more or less all remotes are build like that: they will work for controlling one product and that's all... some remote comes with a software for customizing them but it's usually really bad and if you really want to make your remote rocks you need a third party software.

So I think you have too high expectations from Snapstream regarding the Firefly (the Beyond Media Basic was a nice idea => a mini front end instead of a remote customization... why not...). If I'm not mistaking, you can get a refund...

Regards,
Stéphane.

Re: will firefly control vista Media Center?

I've succesfully used the FireFly on both 32 and 64-bit Vista with the Firefly software and with EventGhost.

It works just fine; it's just that the Snapstream-supplied stuff needs some help.
