Exclamation Firefly Installation crashes while running on Windows Vista

I am using Windows Vista pre-RC1 build 5536 (apparently Beta 2 has ended). Beta 2 was buggy and unstable, but the new release is very nice.

I can get BeyondTV 4.4 working, but not the Firefly because the Firefly setup program, FF_1.2.1.916.exe, crashes.

Can anybody help? Here is a full problem description.

First, FF_1.2.1.916.exe opens a dialog and extracts a program then tries to execute it. The program is...

C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\snapstream.exe

The execution attempt fails. Next it tries

C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\snapstream_commo n.exe

but the same exact thing happens. Next it executes several instructions successively, then a full-screen graphics display appears. The intended display is zoomed in, way out of proportion, such that only a portion of the intended graphic display is visible (the rest is offscreen). All of the screens exhibit this problem (described below as screens 1, 2, and 3).

Screen 1: It requests that I unplug the firefly IR receiver, which I do,

Screen 2: then it requests that I plug it back in, which I do,

Screen 3: then it says the hardware is successfully detected, there is a picture of the firefly remote (mostly offscreen), it is partially covered by a red 'x' (like when a web-browser is trying to display an image but it can't). In the upper-left corner is a different kind of red 'x' (like the button you would push to exit the software). I push buttons on the remote, nothing happens except I hear a noise when each button is pushed. The only button that does something is "CLOSE", which closes the graphical display.

Finally, I get a message that the installation has finished, then another message that it has failed. I do not see any firefly icon in my tray. I cannot run Firefly from the start menu either.

I tried running FF_1.2.1.916.exe as an administrator, that didn't help. I tried using the Program Compatability wizard to run FF_1.2.1.916.exe as an administrator, emulating Win XP sp 2, and with graphics options in the safest configuration, that didn't help either.

Got any ideas?

Re: Firefly Installation crashes while running on Windows Vista

You may want to try this out:

download the Lite version of FF -- drivers only.

Then install Girder -- and see how that works

Re: Firefly Installation crashes while running on Windows Vista

You think I should buy it for $49.99? Or do you mean I shoul just get the free trial, just to install Firefly correctly, then remove Girder?

I'd rather wait for Snapstream to update their software instead of investing another $50, but thanks for the suggestion.

Copy the files in the zip to C:\ProgramData\SnapStream\Firefly\ and restart Firefly app.

Those files still didn't do anything.

I'm running Vista RTM 6000.

Re: Firefly Installation crashes while running on Windows Vista

I'm really interested in when the installation works on Vista. I bought a copy of Ultimate but I don't want to install it until I know the remote can work on it.

It worked for me. I got several (three I think) errors where I selected correct automatically and continue and the install finished.

Re: Firefly Installation crashes while running on Windows Vista

Was this just running the install CD out of the box? Or did you need to do anything extra?

Re: Firefly Installation crashes while running on Windows Vista

You think SnapStream is going to make some 64bit drivers for the Firefly or just leave it in 32bit so people that have 64bit operating systems will not be able to use it?

Re: Firefly Installation crashes while running on Windows Vista

firefly will get errors during the setup, but if you bypass them, it'll install a generic driver for it and work fine...we are currently working on a new driver for Vista.
