firefly remote works for a shot while, then nothing

as title says, firefly works for a bit and then stops responding.

i typically have to go back through the setup where the setup informs i need to plug in (or reseat) the usb device before it recognizes it. the firefly then works fine for a bit (maybe a few hours??) and then nothing again.

this has happened with two different system boards (one an sis chipset and one a via chipset) and two different power supplies.

i'm at a loss and getting a bit perturbed. any ideas on what could be causing this problem?
