Xtremer??

Any one purchase this new product? I am interested to see if it can stream beyond tv's TP files using wireless.

Any feedback on this at all? It looks pretty nice when looking at the specs with the $100 price tag.

Edit: Xtreamer not Xtremer

Re: Xtremer??

Let me add that I know it will stream .TP files, but the question is can it do it effectively over wireless. The fact that it uses N draft 2.0, gives some hope.

Re: Xtremer??

For the price with wireless and a hard drive, I can buy a decent used Dell link box.

Rather run Link.

Re: Xtremer??

Is there ever an alternative to a used Dell link box?

I think for tscales the answer is a most emphatic NO.

Re: Xtremer??

ha, yeah. I don't think that would work for me. I need something small compact and aesthetically pleasing to the eye since it will be very visible.

On top of that, my question wasn't "Are Media Streamers nice?" It was, "Can this box handle HD wirelessly". Eventually there will be a streamer that can do it. Probably not until official N though.

Re: Xtremer??

Downstairs:
- Beefed up Media PC with Beyond TV installed
- 3 HD tuners 1 SD tuner
- Connected to HDTV through HDMI
- Connected directly to Router through Ethernet cable

Upstairs:
- Need streaming to HDTV
- Streamer device must have HDMI

I am toying with the idea of running a cable upstairs but it is going to be difficult to say the least.

You can use other than Dell I just standardized on a vendor for convenience. My observation was just that Link is, to me, the best option as the UI and everything else is consistent.

For example, I like to be able to schedule recordings. Is there an extender that can do that?

Well that's why I asked. How are you going to "stream" to the HDTV? Does it have a LAN or wireless capability? I don't understand how you can do it without either adding a PC at the HDTV for reception or maybe buying two of those wireless routers, one for the server and then somehow get the output of the other router located at the HDTV to feed that HDTV. I must be missing something ?? Is that why you are saying the streamer device must have HDMI? I've never seen such a thing myself.

Re: Xtremer??

Well I guess for the question of whether it will effectively stream upstairs from downstairs wirelessly...really, you can only answer that question.

All 802.11 signals are subject to signal loss as it has to pass through solid objects. If by downstairs you mean that it's on one end of your house, and the receiver is on the other side....the signal would be much less than if it was directly below you. Most likely once that signal degrades to a bitrate below the bitrate of the video file, you will probably suffer issues.

Well it is good to be consistent.

No, you're right. I think that until these "media streamers" fits with what I need then I won't fully move to them.

As for your question, I did have the old MediaMVP for BTV running on my Popcorn Hour A-110 and from that you could view Live TV and setup recordings. Everything the MediaMVP could do before. It still had its issues that I couldn't live with so I put it away and stuck with my Link box.

That is what a product like the Xtreamer does. It can connect to a server on your media pc and it can stream your video files (.tp, .ts, .mpg. etc) to the box. It can be used with wireless or LAN. It has an HDMI out that goes into your tv. You control it with a remote just like with BTV.

Yeah, I guess a Wireless N Draft 2.0 supposedly can get up to 150 Mb/s under great conditions. That means that at best you are looking at 19 MB/s video rate that it can handle.

Since best conditions don't apply ever, I am not sure how they can all claim to stream HDTV over wireless. Correct me if I am wrong, but most HDTV video streams are about 20 MB/s.

I guess I just need to wire the house...
