Converting DVD to H.264

I was wondering if there was a way to convert a home DVD to H.264 via Beyond TV. I know I could hook up an external DVD player and do this but is there a way to use your DVD player on my computer?

You could use an external DVD player and hook up the cables to the input on a tuner or other type of conversion device. You will often lose quality though like this. Then you could hit PLAY on the DVD and in BTV perform a record. This process is infinitely more difficult than just buying a $20 DVD burner through NEWEGG.com and using a free ripper like Handbrake. (not sure if Handbrake does h.264.)
