Using BTV without a internet hookup
I will soon be in a situation where my HTPC will not have internet access. I will have access with my notebook pc. How can I update my stationary pc with my portable one?

Re: Using BTV without a internet hookup
Can you share Internet and force a guide download when it's connected?
I can tether my laptop to my cell phone and share that network on the wired or wireless (MacBook).

Re: Using BTV without a internet hookup
I suspect Terminal is right about licensing. Anyway, there is an XMLTV importer which may allow you to get guide data on your notebook & transfer that to your HTPC:
[plugin] XMLTV Importer If you're in North America, the data may cost you around $20/yr: Schedules Direct You may also be able to find unreliable free guide sources. Supposedly, it is also possible to convert MCE guide data to XMLTV format, which if it works might be the best schedule importing option: GBPVR Documentation Wiki - Manual - EPG If you're in a populated area, the easiest option overall may be getting a neighbor's permission to use their wifi connection for updating your HTPC.

If you're going with a cell modem, you should be able to share the connection. Pick up an Ethernet crossover cable or a USB file sharing cable, then set up sharing on your cell connection. If you're going to rely on hotspots, then your only real choice may be to try to set up an XMLTV service.

Re: Using BTV without a internet hookup
Well, I'll be in the boonies so there will be no sharing from a neighbor. Right now I'm looking at Hardees WiFi as my access as well as access on my work pc.
At one time I had inquired with BTV support and they had something for me to try but I have lost that email. I guess I'll try and submit a ticket to them again. Fickey: I'll look into your suggestions as well. thanks all

Re: Using BTV without a internet hookup
Ahh, that makes more sense. I figured you were just dumping wired service for a new 3G notebook. I didn't think anybody would intentionally move to a location without broadband service... that's my idea of Hell.
Have you considered just getting the cheapest dial-up service you can find? Updates will take longer, but it's not like they're huge - you should be able to find something for a pretty low price. Here's something that might help: High Speed Dial Up Provider : Find Dial Up ISP with TheISPGuide.com You could also check Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T and set if they support 3G in your area. A 3G modem would be $50 a month (if you already have a phone with them, $60 by itself), but it's well worth it if you use a lot of Internet.

Re: Using BTV without a internet hookup
The 3g modem would be the only choice I could make but I hate to have to commit to a 2 year $50 contract.

Re: Using BTV without a internet hookup
true, that part isn't so great.
If it makes any difference - when I bought my modem with Verizon, I was offered a choice: I could pay full price for the modem and go without a contract, or I could go with a 1 or 2 year contract. Depending on where you live, there may also be Cricket service. Cricket is advertising pre-paid 3G service here.

Re: Using BTV without a internet hookup
I've been looking at AT&T but maybe I need to check Verizon. They didn't used to have service where I'll be but I've heard that they do now.
Thanks
