Another feature request, and comment
Having just deleted *another* program accidentally, I thought it might be a good idea to develop a sort of recycle bin for BTV. Not utilizing the Windows recycle bin, but within BTV. It could be very simple, when shows are deleted from the user interface, they would be copied to a "deleted" folder below the default recording folder. It could be user configurable, for example, letting the users specify to keep the last 3 shows deleted, or XX GB of space, or heck, the whole hard drive.
Programatically, it should be fairly easy to make the deleted shows a FIFO queue of sorts- when a new show is deleted, the oldest in the "recycle" folder would truely be deleted and that would replace it. If the remaining space on the drive gets filled up by recording shows, deleted shows would be removed to make room. A "all available space" option would simply delete the oldest shows to make room for newly recorded shows. The "X hours remaining" logic would be changed to ignore shows in the "recycler" when calculating free space. (Also, not for nothing, this could tend to reduce fragmentation on heavily used drives. Just guessing.) I think this would be an excellent option to have, differentiating BTV from the competition, and making it more user friendly- especially with families who might delete other peoples shows and such. Comment: I love BTV. It is WAY worth it to me, especially through Fonceur's work in developing firewire recording, and now with clear QAM. I am disturbed, however, with Snapstream's decision to give up on the integration thing. I'm not saying you guys need to be everything to everyone, but it would be nice to at least allow some interface customizations so users can roll their own solutions. The user interface and the remote work so well, wouldn't it be nice to be able to add some options to say, trigger a software DVD player, or trigger Winamp for music. I've tried making it work with Firefly, and it just wouldn't work. Maybe all that needs to happen is a little work on Firefly itself? One issue was that having the user interface running, even in the background, conflicted with DVD playing software. Maybe all that needs to be done is figure out a way to have BTV release the playback hardware when it's not in the foreground? Thank you and have a pleasant tomorrow... |
