Firefly Mini with Girder 3.3

Can the firefly mini be used with Girder 3.3? I read somewhere that its a HID device and I'm not sure if it would work. I want to use girder to assign key presses to all the firefly mini's buttons the same way I did with the regular Firefly. Can the Mini be used with other receivers and girder, such as the Microsoft MCE IR receiver?

Thanks

Re: Firefly Mini with Girder 3.3

How funny. I was just working on my FF Mini over the weekend. (My good remote went through the laundry. Remind me to thank my 5 year old.)

For the most part, the FireFly is an HID keyboard. However, the transport buttons (play, pause, etc) don't seem to map to the standard Windows media keys.

If Girder can map HID device buttons, it'll work fine for you.

However, the mini itself shouldn't work with the Microsoft IR receiver: the codes are different. It can work with the USB-UIRT, though.

I also tested a Harmony remote with the FF Mini receiver - works fine. The Harmony remote can also emulate Hauppauge's bundled remote and an MS Media Center Remote just fine. However, I can't STAND Harmony's editing software. Even though the remote can be made to do what I want, Harmony's Wizard format makes it hard to program I it the way I want.

Re: Firefly Mini with Girder 3.3

Thanks for the help. I guess I'll buy it and give it a try. It's for my mother in law who likes to keep things very simple. The Firefly Mini should be perfect for her. Just hope it works with Girder since we also use Meedio which is why I need to map keyboard shortcuts with Girder.

Re: Firefly Mini with Girder 3.3

Honestly, I wouldn't spend money on a FF mini. Actual Media Center remotes are more widely compatible, and you'll have better "out of the box" support with other programs. Anything "Certified for Vista Media Center" will work with lots of stuff. The FF Mini only works with BTV (without some keymapping and HID mapping.)

Also, check out the Gyration remotes. They may be out of your price range, but they're the only remotes that give you real mouse control as part of the deal.
