Using HDMI from desktop to HDTV
Hi,
Planning on getting a new HTPC desktop and ws wondering if I use HDMI to connect the pc to a 32 inch 720p hdtv if I would be able to use the tv as a pc monitor as well? Is there such a thing as upscaling or upconverting the desktop so that its 1920 X 1080 ? if not what is the expected resolution 1440 X 720 or 1366 x 768? I'm really confused by all this resolution and upscaling stuff... |

Re: Using HDMI from desktop to HDTV
Yes to your first question.
Your second question is dependent on your TV. TVs have different resolutions they can output. Your TV will definitely not output 1900x1080 since it is a 720 tv. There is no upscaling either aside from zoom options.

Re: Using HDMI from desktop to HDTV
I believe RGB will give you 640x480 resolution. VGA cable will get you the highest PC resolution that is supported by your TV. HDMI will give you up to 720 given that your tv is 720 max

Re: Using HDMI from desktop to HDTV
There are some misconceptions here, so I'll jump in since I have a lot of computer attached TVs.
HDMI vs VGA depends on the TV. Theoretically, HDMI is better, but not always in the real world. For example, my 1080p Samsung works better (better picture) through VGA. MOST 720p TV sets are 1366x768 or 1360x768. VGA will use those exact resolutions (if your video card supports it). HDMI will too, but will overscan, so you need a video card that will correct for it. In that situation, I still find VGA crisper. Virtually no TV is actually 1280x720 (720p). Best advice? Try them both. Make SURE your TV supports its native resolution through VGA before you buy it. My LG LCD does NOT.
