Recoding HD through S-Video

I decided to see how/if I could record HD (Satellite Receiver).
I was shocked at how good the recording looked. Was much better then standard channels.
I know it isn't HD...but still was amazing quality with S-Video.....when you have a good video quality to work with.

Ops darn wireless keyboard...missed the r in Recordings in title =/

Re: Recoding HD through S-Video

In order to record from a Sat box, you would need a HD-PVR unit. This is the only unit in the market that allows you to capture in HD format.

Yes, there are HD tuner cards out there, but they are more geared toward tuning Over The Air HD transmissions and unencrypted digital channels.

Re: Recoding HD through S-Video

Yes, I agree that the quality of recordings thru S-Video from my DirecTV HD channel is awesome. It IS much better than I used to get from the SD channel feed.

Who needs the HD-PVR when the recordings look this good thru s-video?!

Re: Recoding HD through S-Video

"Looks good" is a relative term. Note that s-video capture is still SD recording. And with a good static filter/signal booster, even analog tuned SD recording look as good as S-video, atleast in my case.

Difference between s-video and HD is quite significant in terms of quality. s-video capture is 480 pixels based, while HD is 480/720/1080. I could post my s-video capture of a football game on CBS versus my HD capture of that same game, and you would definitely see a difference.

Re: Recoding HD through S-Video

True HD >HD Recorded through S-Video>SD....Companies degrading signal to squeeze in as many channels as possible.

I suspect...if it isn't already happening...companies are degrading HD quality to squeeze in more channels. Only a matter of time before HD never looks as good as it use to.

Re: Recoding HD through S-Video

All I can say is try to record from a DirecTV SD channel feed and compare with a recording from the DirecTV HD channel feed and you will see a HUGE difference. Yes, I know it's not HD, but there is a very large difference in quality anyway.

Try it and see.

Re: Recoding HD through S-Video

Since recording with the HD-PVR all SD recordings are now second rate and yes still watchable but severely lacking any reason for hype of any kind unless you just came out of a time warp from the black and white era.
