Record OTA HD at SD resolution/bitrate?

Is it possible to record to an ATSC HD channel to an MPEG-2 profile at SD resolution/bitrate, or would I have to record in HD and showsqueeze?

I don't have an HDTV, but want to take advantage of free OTA signals.

Re : Record OTA HD at SD resolution/bitrate?

When recording OTA signal, the capture card simply dumps it to a file, so you can't select a bit rate or anything... OTOH, some stations are sending both the HD (at a lower bit rate) and the SD version in that stream (or a weather channel or various other crap), so it might be worth checking for the stations that you are interested by...

Re: Record OTA HD at SD resolution/bitrate?

1. How large is the average file for a 1 hour HD recording?
2. Does the showsqueeze take a lot longer than an SD MPEG-2 to divx recompression?
3. Does the commercial skip take a lot longer to generate as well?
4. What format is the HD recording stored in?
5. Can the HD recording be played at SD resolution, or does it have to be converted first?
6. Are there heavy system requirements to playback the HD at SD resolution?

Re: Record OTA HD at SD resolution/bitrate?

1 & 2 - That is all dependent on the power of your computer, namely CPU. With my specs in my tag, I showsqueeze hour shows in 15 minutes time.

3 - Smartchaptering is a quicker process than showsqueezing since it's just scanning for the breaks in the show rather than reencoding.

4 - Transport Stream files

5 - You mean playback on a non-HD capable display? Sure it will play.

6 - I believe that the Nvidia line of video card become HD compliant at the 7300 line and above. I know some have had no issues with using some of the higher end 6000 lines either. However the 8000 series includes a newer chipset that offloads HD playback to the graphic card rather than taxing the CPU. I'm still a bit hazy as to what you really mean by HD to SD. Is your tv/monitor not capable of resolutions over 480?

1. How is the size of the TS file dependant on CPU power?

5. So TS files can be played back on my SD TV connected via S-Video at 640x480?

6. With MPEG-2 or DivX files, the resolution of the recording could be higher than the 640x480 I was outputing at. Are TS files played-back scaled to the lower resolution as well?

The size of the file seems to be dependant on the broadcaster. I woulo plan for 5-8 GB per hour

Playback of TS files on SD TV is dependant mostly on the processing power of the PC (CPU/Memory/Video card)

Re: Record OTA HD at SD resolution/bitrate?

You don't need an HDTV to watch OTA HD programming. Obviously, it won't be in HD but it plays fine as long as you have a computer with the minimum requirements for HD. My bedroom tv is a 15yo 27" w/S-video input from the computer and I can watch live OTA HD signals or pre-recorded TS files in letterbox or zoom to fill the 4:3 screen.

Or just record from an ATSC STB into an SD tuner's line in:
