Newbie here looking for info

Tired of paying the monthly DVR rental on cable. Came across this BTV and it looks really cool. Question, I run Window 2000. Can I run the BTV and if yes, which would be the best tuner to get. Would like to watch and record or record 2 at same time. My system is a little older, 1.7ghz 512mg 120gig hd.

Thanks

Re: Newbie here looking for info

I ran BTV for just fine on Win 2k on an older rig (HTPC #2 in my signature). I have since upgraded to XP, but not due to performance issues with 2k). You will have no problems recording SD TV on your rig with a Hauppauge 500 (2 tuners) or 2, single tuner, Hauppauge 150 or ATI Theater 550 cards. The only problem will be if you don't have a decent video card (or an AGP slot on your motherboard to add a good video card) to play back the recordings on your TV. The onboard video cards on older mobos generally don't work very well.
What Video card do you have? Exact system specs will help us guide you better. What is your TV source, cable? antenna? set top box?

Gigabyte MotherBoard
AMD Athlon 1700 CPU
S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR Video
512 DDR2200 memory

Right now it's antenna. Cancelled Comcast when we moved. May get something later. I have read about HD programs broadcast on the regular airwaves. Is this true and how well will this antenna pick them up?

Re: Newbie here looking for info

if you want to record in HD, you need an HDTV tuner card to catch the signal

I have a crappy old antenna that picks up amazing HD content in my basement, it gives static for analog broadcasts.

your system is a little weak for HD. SD it is fine with.

OK, found a complete system and was cheaper to start with this which came with BTV4. Good starting place anyway. Would like to get a dual tuner.
