HD Homerun Questions

Hello,

I am interested in getting a HDHR; however, I don't know if my computers and network can handle it. I only have a wired 10/100t network. My server is a athlon64 3200 single core with a ati x1950 video card. My main link machine is only a amd xp2700 with a Nvidia 6600gt video card. Will these machine and network be able to handle the HD recording and streaming. Finally, in all the docomentation online there was one post which indicated you needed a ATSC tunner to work with the HD homerun, but if I am understanding the process right, the HD homerun has two tunners in it. I only have two Hauppange 250pvrs in the server now. Is this tunner really required? Thanks for any imput you can provide.

Re: HD Homerun Questions

Your network is fine, the HDHR is a 100mbit device. The HDHR will give you 2 additional HD tuners. The big plus is that you can record unencrypted HD channels from a standard cable tv connection. No other tuners do this with BTV (as of today). I get all of the local channels and some music channels here in Louisville. You can also use an HD antenna with the HDHR.

I'm no expert on AMD procesors so I can't help you there. I will say that I can record on all of my tuners (2 HD + 3 SD) at the same time and my CPU usage is about 25%. Recording does not use much CPU. Playing back a 1080i recording runs my CPU up to 80%. A better video card may help this.

Re: HD Homerun Questions

I think you're just fine. I think the doc you read was that you needed an NTSC (not ATSC) tuner. That is for Media Center, which has a bizarre restriction that you just can't do HD.

If you have cable, then the HDHR will record unencrypted QAM channels.

It will NOT record analog cable channels (TNT, TBS, etc.).

Re: HD Homerun Questions

Hey,

Thanks for the replies. I am still a little worried about my processors, but I think I will give the HD Homerun a shot I can always upgrade if I need to.

Thanks Again

Re: HD Homerun Questions

Ive got an Hdhomerun running in my pvr box with a athlon x2 3800, 1gig mem, 7800 gt video, and it never skips a beat. I used to have a single 3200 amd in there, and I really havent noticed a whole lot of difference other than it can convert 2 shows at a time.

I have never had a problem with my hdhomerun, unlike my 2 hauppauge 500's that are in the same box.

When you get it, go over to thier website and check out the directions on setting it up. very helpful.

have fun.

I too am very pleased with the HDHR, though you might want to make sure you get a strong signal

Re: HD Homerun Questions

While recording today's Terminator series episode (Fox HD in 720p, I think), my PC's network utilization was pegged at ~12% on a 100Mbps switched network. So if your wired network is running at 100Mbps, you should be able to handle two programs being transferred no problems barring your network being saturated with other stuff already.
